The new application for 2010-11 is now open and application form can be downloaded from the following link:

www.shck.edu.hk

The filled application forms will need to be submitted IN-PERSON on either December 4th (Fri) or 5th (Sat), from 8:30am to 11:00am.

Interview is scheduled on January 9th, 2010.

Welcome!

Just some more hints in case the interview time may affect the children's performance. This is just an assumption based on last year so I cannot guarantee if this is the same this year.

Basically, the earlier you hand in the application form, the earlier your interview time was last year. So, if your children is better earlier in the morning, then you better go line up there early on Friday morning. Last year, we hand in just around 11am on Friday, and our interview time is right after lunch (around 1pm).

I think you may assume each year there would be around 15 (+/- 5) boys a year. As the connection to primary school is only for girls, so majority of students applied would be girls, so less boys to compete. However, this is a good kindergarten to consider even without the primary connection. So far I find the program designed for the children is very comprehensive.

It's seems to me that only boys with sisters currently studying in SHCK will be accepted. Anyone can name some exceptions?

Shouldn't be, I know at least one this year accepted but is the only child in the family. However, didn't attend eventually.

I think this depends on everyone's expectation to determine the level is sufficient. At least I don't need to shop around outside for English classes as many spk parents would need to.

(only because they have no phonics classes yet on K1, apology to spk parents

)

We have English (phonics or daily conversational) classes everyday except Monday, on which we have one day of Putonghua class. I am not exactly sure how long it is but I think it's about 30-45 mins per day.

I didn't have much expectation at first but now I have no needs for any external courses at all. Just freely find some interest classes for my daughter like drawing or music for her own interest only. The progress was way more than I expect since my daughter was originally reluctant to learn English before school started, and now she can do some simple English conversation with me (of course in the capacity of matters related to what she has learned). She is also more comfortable watching DVDs in English and have definitely developed interests on reading English books. So for me it is excellent and absolutely no regrets at all of choosing this kindergarten. This school has a very good tradition to assist children to develop the habit of reading, however, parents involvement is also high to support it.

1) Do you know if the school prefer to take kids from Catholic family? (since I am not a Catholic, thus worry that I will have lower chance of entering into this school)

2) Found that they ask about the 1st language your kid speak at home. Does it really affect the inteview result??

I am sorry I missed you message since it was posted exactly 1 min. before my last reply so I didn't notice there was a new message.

For question (1), I would say any schools with religion background would prefer students/ parents with similar background.  However, it is not a must since my family is also not a Catholic family.

It doesn't really matter with (2).  They just want to know which languages were being used.

Frankly, I have similar doubts after I downloaded the application form last year at similar time.  I almost gave up handing in the form.  Fortunately, I didn't give up too soon and my daughter told me we have chosen the right kindergarten so I would also tell you the same.  Don't give up too soon!

Hi Angelice,

They have no such preferences. SHCK is one of the kindergartens I found with a relatively higher population of small B. Of course, big B will still be slightly advantaged, this is the fact and we must accept that. However, more chances are given to small B in this kindergarten.

Good luck and there are plenty of small B in my daughter's class!

Just to remind you but many parents will queue up on the Friday morning since (1) many would try to submit before works and (2) prefer to interview in the morning. So reserve some time for the waiting.

REMINDER to everyone: Bring the OFFICIAL copy of the birth certificate. I missed this also last year and luckily they let me bring the official copy back for confirmation later, but need to visit the office in a separate trip.

Ian, thanks a lot for your advice always.

May I ask it SHCK's primary and KG are located at the same place? Don't know why I cannot find the exact location of this school from Centamap as well as my driving map book. I planned to go there early in the morning to line up as per your advise, please advise the exact location or what's is the best transportation to that school? (Heard that taxi has no drop-off point in front of the school, is it true??)

Well, not "fully automatic" but "semi-automatic" (just joking). :P

Basically at September of K3 year, will need to fill in the application form for SHCSPS (i.e. Sacred Heart Canossian School (Private Section)) and pay a registration fee. No interviews are required and can secured a place in the primary school.

Who told you cannot take taxi? We do that all the time but you usually tell the taxi driver you are going to 羅便臣道嘉兆臺. The campus of SHCK is underneath this residential building. Alternatively, you can also use public transport. It is specified on the kindergarten website already:

The primary school campus is on Caine Road, which should be easier to find. It's basically below 嘉兆臺 also.
