My advice is that it's still not too late to make a change. As long as one of the parents or a family member can talk to the kid in chinese consistently and frequently, the kid can learn really fast.
Also, think about why you want your kid to study in "traditional" school, & what kind of person do u want your kid to be in the future, then maybe you will know how to plan for your kid.

agree. You or your hubby turns to CHI channel, he learns quickly.

I think communicating in mother tongue is very important as the parents' language(s) is/are native.  I have friends who is native in Cantonese and whose hubby is native in Putonghua.  Their children communicate with each of them in their own mother tongue fluently, nearly bilingual.  Of course if you really want to communicate with them in English as well, it is better to ask yourself if that is the English level you expect on them, likewise for relying on maid.  From my experience, I always need to correct the pronounication and gramma errors made by my Philipino maid as I don't want my children to pick up those errors.  Teaching children right in the first instance is so important and quick.  However, correcting their errors is such a pain and longer process.

I also agree with eggmama, younger kids pick up a language very quickly.  So don't worry.  Start to switch back to your mother tongue if you want.

My hubby is native in English thus we use English to talk to our girl and also teach her putonghau... she now speaks and thinks in English first and can understand a bit putonghau.  She is now 22 mths old and we want to let her know cantonese only after her basic language for Eng and Chinese is formed.
