My daughter is studying P.1 in St. Francis'.  Both my daughter and myself like the school very much.

Some information for your reference:
Class size in St. Francis' is 32
Class size in Goop hope is more than 40

Both schools have new campus for the primary sections.

德望在九龍, 聖方濟各在灣仔, 一個要俾錢, 一個不要錢,

水準就分別不大, 學校面積應該是德望大一些.  錢與住所很重要.

I have some questions about GH, hope you guys can answer:

GH is a good school, how good? To me:
1) GH Chinese is taught by Cantonese not PTH, for me PTH is important
2) GH is not an Eng primary school
3) GH school fee is not low (over $3k)
4) moral education is really good???
5) 45 students in 1 class

Pls state your comments if I get wrong information.

Hmm, your question is quite interesting, I'm not a GH nor St. Francis parent, and I don't know how good are these 2 schools, but I'll try to answer yr question based on my 2 cents opinion....

GH is a good school, how good? To me:
1) GH Chinese is taught by Cantonese not PTH, for me PTH is important

Though it is believed that teaching in PTH make the kids easier to master Chinese language esp. the writing skill, however, this is not a '=' formula.  To be good at Chinese, a child need to have more readings, and a good Chinese teacher who arouse the child's great interest to Chinese language.  So, we can't say without PTH = not good Chinese Language training.  If you mean the ability to speak in PTH, then, I'm sure anybody who know how to read Chinese characters and willing to spend time to learn the 'Pinyin', and grasp chances to practise, he/she will be good at speaking PTH.  So, it is not fair to judge whether GH is good or not by saying that the Chinese lesson is not conducted by PTH

2) GH is not an Eng primary school

Same, Eng primary school is not equal to good primary school.  Most of the primary school in HK is not English primary school including SPCC, St Mary.  Do you think they are not good?

3) GH school fee is not low (over $3k)

Whether over 3k is expensive or not really depends on different parents' standard.  Some may think it is a fair charge.  So, this is not an objective benchmark to measure GH.

4) moral education is really good???

It's difficult to say, depends on yr requirement.  GH is a catholic school and the public tends to think that they emphasize more on moral and religious education.  At the end of the day, good moral eduaction doesn't ensure there are good students, there are other factors as well, such as family education, the social environment.....

5) 45 students in 1 class

Comparing to many school, the ratio is high.  Yet, there is no universal standard on the ratio to ensure good quality of education.  As of now, the studies indicated only that for students with higher calibre, big class may have positive effect to them due to the group influence effect. And the effectiveness of small class is highly depends on the capability of the teachers who conduct the classes.  Again, only this point cannot judge if GH is good or not.

St. Francis' is a government subsidized school.  The class size is fixed at 30 students per class.  The school can only admit a maximum of 33 (30+10%) students in a class.

Good Hope is a private school.  They can admit as many as student they like.

A bigger class size doesn't means it is more popular.

To me, practice makes perfect, speak more, always in specific language environment is the 'key' to learn language well.

PTH can let students 'write how I say', that's why many U students from China is so competitive.

Moreover, 45 in one class limits students interactive with teachers.

You right, if you put much more effort in learning ENG and PTH, you can get good result, but do kids have so much time afterschool as they need to attend other art or physical training nowadays?

My daughter is studying in the PTH class in St. Franics' now.  From my observation, all the students in the PTH class are with high PTH standard right at the beginning .  They can manage to listen and read the book.  The school also reminded us that to consider our daughters PTH standard before picking the PTH class.

I believe the support at home is also very important.  The school did ask us whether we could support our daughter in PTH / Chinese learning at home.

You really need to get your child well prepare in K2 or K3 if you really want to pick the PTH class in Primary.

Agreed. There is a saying that if your child is not good at understanding PTH, it will hinder her pace to learn the Chinese language at the beginning.

In respond to 'eggmama', I have no objection of parents focus on PTH in these days, however, I still don't see this is the major factor of learning good Chinese language. And to me, it's more important to learn good Chinese language than just speaking in PTH. Learn to speak is different from learn to use the language.  Just like grammer and oral are two different testing papers. Anyway, I think HK  already have the PTH environment for the kids, I'm sure children are quick to learn PTH and they have plenty of opportunities to practise PTH. Finally, I'm not quite convinced that U student from China is competitve because they are good at PTH, they are good at the subjects they studied.

Sorry that I drag from the main topics.  I'll stop here.
