My son is K2 student now. I will help to enrol Yr2010-11 p.1 application. I hv called the school, they said the application for yr 2010-11 will be on end of Aug,2009.

St. margaret co-ed primary is a very good school coz my son is now studying p.1 there.

His Eng & Putonghua got great improvement. He could write stories in Eng for 4 - 8 pages with some pictures illustrated by him. Of course, there're some wrong spelling and grammatical errors. However, it's rather good practice for students, especially start from p.1 to write in Eng.

He also loves reading coz st. margaret has regular reading program requesting students to read a certain no. of books (Chi & Eng) and write down reports after reading.

All in all, it's really a good school.

Wish those on waiting list could have chance to get in to enjoy the school life there la~

All in all, it's really a very good school.

Wish those on waiting list kids could get chance to get-in to enjoy school life there la~

Hi,

Knowing that SMC is a good school with excellent Eng environment, I am eager to know if u do concern abt the TSA results, the sch banding.

According to my friend, she said SMC will not hand out their TSA result, it would be quite difficult to find alternatives school when promoted to sec school..... what is yr opinion?

Dear WD40,

Great to know that your son will have great improvement on Eng level. However, may I know your son's level is already very good & speak fluently before he admitted to SMC ? Will the homework be too difficult if the children's Eng oral is not really so fluently & with grama mistake ?

Actually, smc quite concern kids' Eng standard. So those kids who have good & fluent Eng communication skills & abilities, definately will have great chance to be accepted.

One of my son's schoolmates who eventually got a place by mid Aug last year. So, don't be flat-up. Keep "knocking" the door of smc via phone calls & letters to show your sincerity.

Wish yr kid will be smc's studnent la~

Hi Lynn,

As per my memory, the interview was conducted into 2 rounds. 1st round for kids ONLY while 2nd round would be arranged for parents ONLY (whose kids passed 1st round interview).

As per my son's description, the interview divided into 4 parts:

- Chi test
- Memory test
- Math test
- Eng test (it also sub-divided into written & oral)

My son had have attended the 1st interview for around 1 hour.

Not sure if this year's interview will adopt this format or not, but well prepare for yr kid is essential.

As I know, most direct subsidy schools (DSS) no need to participate the TSA, like dgs, dbs, dps, st. paul, good hope, ying wah..etc and so do SMC.

Moreover, those schools I mentioned above have their secondary sections which not only for their primary students, but also open for other DSS and even govt primary students to apply. So, there're still many choices when my son go onto secondary.

Honestly, I'm not concern so much on TSA or banding. Instead, I rather concern on my son's languages development coz I believe if kid is proficiency in languages which including both Eng, Chi & Putonghua, then he/she is much easily to learn other subjects like Hist, Geog, General Study...etc. Of course, Math is also important to train up kid's analytical mind.

As such, I would perfer to choose a school where can provide excellent language environment for kids.

If you concern most on banding, I think you may consider to apply govt primary schools via lucky draw coz ALL govt primary schools MUST participate the TSA for allocation for govt secondary schools. In fact, many good govt primary schools like st. mary, heep yan, maryknoll..etc have sound track records and higher banding.

Forgive me to say that SMC may not be your cup of tea if you really concern banding, TSA results...etc.

Anyway, wish you could make a good choice for your kid.

Thanks WD40, my son do have a good performance during the English class in British Council. But when I talk to him in Eng, he always with some grama mistake and not really really fluent. But the Eng class teacher always give him a very good comment say good communciation, good understanding, etc. Can I trust the teacher's comment? I really want my son to have a chance be the SMC boy, but if he really lucky that to get a seat, I am also afraid his ability, and may need long time to adapt the new enviroment. As you know, my son is living in a traditional Chinese family and we don't have any maid. His Eng level is basically trained up by myself during the very limited time (after I off work).

Frankly, the home assisgnments of SMC for p.1 is not heavy when comparing with other traditional schools.  As such, students have much time to read and to do other projects.  My son recently start to check up dictionary by himself to do one of Eng projects.  It's a very good training and practice for students to learn how to learn.  Not just 死記、死背.

Moreover, ALL subjects of SMC are taught in Eng including Music, PE, General Studies, Religious, Math, Art...etc.  Even the morning assembly, it also conduct in Eng. Of course, except Chi which is taught in Putonghua.

SMC do provide good environment for students to learn, to speak and even to communicate in Eng & Putonghua.

You may find some parents' comments/views in other thread under SMCPS that some of their kids, at the begining of school term, also unwilling to speak Eng.  However, after several months, their kids dare to say, to write and to communicate with others in Eng & Putonghua. No matter fluent or not, it definiately a very good start and improvement.

So, don't worry too much.  Keep knocking door to wait for the good news.

Thanks WD40. I like this school as it is EMI and it has its own secondary school. It will become famous when we can see it has good academic results from its secondary school section.

Dear WD40, thanks a lot for your comment. It really give me a big encouragement and increase more & more of my eageress to let my son be the SMC boy. However, it really depends on my son's luck. Still no news from SMC. Of course, I will continue to knock the door, I am sure I won't give up. All the SMC parents are the best parents who are very helpful and kindness.

TSA results 出面津私小, 都不會disclose, 只係教處同學校之間先至知個result, 作為一個全港學校的學術水準, 比學校去作一個參考.

If so, why some parents said that they known the TSA results if those are only between Edu Dept & the schools?

Anyway, I just known that it's NOT complusory for direct subsidy schools (DSS) to participate the TSA.

If you'll be invited to attend 2nd round interview, then your kid nearly to be accepted (more than 90%).

During the 2nd interview, 2 teachers would chat with you regarding their findings /observations on your kid in 1st interview and share some their school's teaching methods and requirements..etc with parent. If parent's expectations towards school and their kid are in line with SMC's, then the teacher would give a form for parent to sign and confirm to give up the "lucky draw". This imply SMC 100% accept your kid la!

Yup.

One of their Chinese text books is "綜合高效識字" while others are relating to Putonghua. My son in P.1 now is learning 普通話拼音. He could listen to a Putonghua story and mark down what's the 拼音 of some words.

For 1st interview, most were conducted in Eng, which included memory test, Eng test and Math test.

While for 2nd interview, it's conducted in Chi between parents & the teachers. The atmosphere was good, just like chit-chat between friends.

Up to now, we believe that we've made a good choice for my son...heee...

My son told me that the Chi teacher (Putonghua) divided the class into 3 tables. During some lessons, the teacher would asked them questions and encouraged the students answered in Putonghua to see which table got higher marks / more stars.

My son quite enjoy such learning environment and he also love to learn Putonghua...haaa....

I think you can phone SMC directly to ask their questions coz I didn't have such detailed..heee....sorry.

But pls be caution that some parents always mix up SMC Girls College in HK Island with SMCPC in Kowloon. So pls make sure you're talking abt SMCPC, not SMC Girls College.
