各位：

有一事想請教。

女兒的英文功課，有一部分是叫孩子們分別將long e sound和short e sound的文字圈出來。我本身不懂phonics，所以，想了解，當第一次接觸這些生字的時候，應該怎樣區別long e sound和short e sound呢？例如說，我們都知道：

1）eagle, ear, equal, eat, evening, Easter是“long e sound”；

2）elephant, elevator, egg, elf, elbow, Eskimo是“short e sound”

.......但是，假若是第一次看到它們的話，是怎樣就知道哪個用long e sound、哪個用short e sound呢？

phonic rules # 1

When a vowel is followed by a consonant, the vowel is short and is
marked with a breve or we call it a smile.
The vowel is usually short when there is one vowel.
(cat, dog, hot)

phonic rule #2

When there are two vowels in a word the first one is long and the second one is silent.
The first one talks and the second one is silent.
The first vowel is marked with a long line and second one is crossed out.
(coat, ride, read)

請問坊間各phonics 教材有什麼不同?
其實phonics 的發音是否 standard,
即每套教材所教的音到是相同的, 不過
只是學習的方法不同呢 ??

I believe phonics is good for pre-schoolers while IPA is for bigger kids. So even my 3-year-old kid is curious about the IPA symbols, I have not thought of teaching him IPA until he is older.

Back to phonics, previously I note a recommended phonics website given by a BK parent. It may be a good reference even for parents to self-learn phonics free of charge online. The web link is as follows:
