Dear all parent,
I'm a father of 2 boys (4 and 2 yrs old).
elder boy Camill is in K2 now. and my wife and I wondering which primary school is good for him for the P1 school application.
we have visited Camoes on 1st May with our son and all of us were very impressed and found that the local and pupils are good and nice!
their French stream interested us particularly as our son speaks French with us and Cantonese with his grand parents.
I would like to ask if anyone knows any other primary school in Hong Kong has French stream as well (other than private international school and lycee francais)

希望各位多多指教!!!!
Thanks a lot in advance!

yes! There are almost 2500 applicants every year. But if you apply French steam, the applicants are less, only around 600. The school will give 30% of total seats for other nation children. Thus, yr chance is quite high.

the Tsin Tsing is the one in Sham Shui Po, they got main stream and international stream. For the school fee, main stream = $3600 per month, international stream = $5200 per month.

You may try Camoes($1500) and St. Margret ($2900), both of them were good!
My son will attend the 2nd interview of Camoes tomorrow, the school fee is reasonable and I feel the school is well organize.

But we didn't apply for the St. Margret that I got 2 kids....too expensive...
school fee, school bus, lunch, others....

My boy is only in the waiting list, so disappointed, you can find the thread in BK at around mid oct, 08 topic of " SMC or 聖瑪加利, there are so many good comments in there!
It is not easy to get in but I think more chance for yr boy beacause of the nationality! This year they only accept 80 children!

There should be about 80 students in P.1. Students are divided into 3 groups so that only about 28 students are in one group. In Hong Kong, this teacher to students ratio is comparatively lower than other schools.
My daughter studies P.1 in this school. In her class, there are about 10 non-Chinese. So, English is used as medium of Instruction.

作者: sara    時間: 08-11-7 17:17

My daughter and I really like the school. It is a real EMI school and students dare to speak English during the class.
Compared to traditional school, the workload of homework is not very heavy so that my daughter can handle them by herself. Students can learn actively and study happily in the school.
But it really depends on what kind of schools do you like......

flostangraphy,

My son is also accepted for 2009 P1.  According to the vice principal, P1 & P2 students will need to study all 3 languages, one in each of the school terms.  The purpose is for the kids to get a taste of all the 3 languages.  By P3, students will have to choose one language to study in the coming 10 years (P3 - S6).

Chinese is taught in Mandarin.

But between SMC & TT, don't you think SMC is better?  Maybe I'm not too familiar with TT but I think SMC is similar to TT's international stream but SMC is much cheaper.

Also, I like the modern language of SMC and their Chinese is using 高效識字法 and taught in Mandarin.

作者: bblaw    時間: 08-11-8 12:34

Aaron ma,
Both of them provide a good English environment. TT has a high quality of teachers from hearing say. The teachers must come from UK, or Canada. Chinese teachers come from mainland(main stream & international stream). But, the campus is not attractive and the school  fee is more expensive. But SMC is not more NET comparing with TT. SMC is less homework , but TT  is more traditional.

Actually, SMC was band 3 school before. SMC was a girl college  about 5 years ago. But, since 2003, SMC has  changed to DSS and co-education.At that moment, I am still no any comment on the new campus and image. My friends have a good comments on the new SMC, but so far, I am still  mind the image of SMC.

But,  My daughter went to Pui Kiu college interview. I saw a non-Chinese girl and from their conversion, I heard she failed the SMC interview Bcos she do not know Chinese. It seem SMC becomes famous and more difficulty in interview. From SMC BK forum, the SMC has +ve comment. My friend told me the English pronuncation of the students is very good.So far, I have a lot of friends kids are studying in there.

Also,it is in a dilamma for me. I think SMC become improving than the old SMC.

Dear flostangraphy,

Secondary School with French Stream:
DBS - boys' school
St Paul's Convent - girls' school (not much use to you as yours are 2 boys!)

Well, frankly speaking, I would say all local schools with French Stream are the elite local schools and will not be easy to get in. You can't expect to find authentic French food in just any restaurant here in HK, right? But if your kids speaks native level English and holds a foreign passport, I do think they have a competitive edge over the other local kids when applying for these famous schools.

Maybe you could also check where the non-Chinese graduates of Cameos TSL go.

we know that for the secondary school, we still have lyceee francais as back up.
i would say my son's native language would be both cantonese and french. and in his kindergarten, they just teach them writing this year. so i still don't know what level he is by now.
he is somehow quite average in 3 language, but manage to speak better english than his french cousins, speak better french than his french cousins who live in US, and speak better cantonese than his english/chinese cousins...

SMC held 2 briefing sessions in 2008 (July/Aug and late Sep). i was told by the Vice Principle that there were 800+ applicants applied after the 2nd briefing.  so if I give a rough number of 300 applicants from July/Aug till Sep, that will be an estimate of 1100 applicants.

they only accept 80 P1 kids.

作者: flostangraphy    時間: 09-1-8 20:16

hello happy rain,
welcome for the info.

for the moment, we have only selected 3 primary school...
1/ 保良局陳守仁小學
2/ 拔萃男書院附屬小學
3/ 聖瑪加利男女英文中小學
three are them are very very demanded by many parents.... the ratio of admit i have heard are somehow between 1/15 or even 1/20....

we may have to study better about the schools below as back up as well:
地利亞英文小學 (we don't know much, but seems they have french stream as well)
基慧小學(馬灣) (he he, we live there)
保良局世德小學 (don't know much, it's just next door from their kindergarten)
+ of cause Lycee Francais (very expensive in international stream, can't afford.... but no chinese in french stream..... and very far from home, with no school bus....)

how about for your kid?!!?

just visited diocesan on it's open house day.
had a little chat with the french teacher.
french stream is a very little section in school, only 6 to 7 pupils per class, allowing teacher focus on every pupil.

Dear Stanley,
I live in Tsing Yi and my daughter has been learning French for 1.5 yrs. (We always go to the beach in Park Island.) She is using the French learning program called Lili, la petite grenoville. Have you ever heard of that program? She is now in the last chapter (there are 3 chapters and 8 lessons in each chapter) and I am thinking of going to Lili 2. I can buy it from the French bookstore in Wellington street, Central. I was told it is a lot cheaper in France. Is that true? Somehow I think the Lili 2 is a bit hard but I saw the Alex and Zoe 1 &2 is a bit too easy. What is your comment? My daughter will be going to P1 this Sept and so she is a year older than your son.

hello hazelle,
nice to meet you.
we didn't know any about "Lili, la petite grenoville" de CLE edition until you told me about it!
after a search from internet, it seems very interesting for young children learning french.
i do think it may be a bit cheaper from france after deduct the shipping cost. but i don't know how much is the different.
my wife doesn't go to the "parentheses" that often, however, everytime she does, she comes back with quite a lot of of reading happily! it still a good place for french book collection in hong kong!
she does order directly children magazines via internet for our sons. i can ask the list from my wife if you are interested.
do let us know when you come to ma wan beach. we will happy to know more people and make friends with parents to share more experience about education of our children.
and also the best learning method of a language is still practice a lot!
otherwise, we know that there is a new learning center in north point which is found by friends of mine. after discussed with them and understand their aims and policy for this center, we are quite sure that their teaching method is very interesting and intuitive!
may i know where your daughter is going to P1?!
we are looking for french steam primary school for camill as well, if you know any, please let me know. (we don't really want our son go to french international school as we are afraid that he may lost his chinese completely).
best regards
stanley

Dear Stanley,
Thanks for your information and I am very happy to share with any parents who are interested in having their children to learn French. My daughter is not going to any of the French stream primary school, although I was planning to.
Well, I do not know the schools that you are planning to apply very, very much (I can only tell you what I knew when I was applying the schools for my daughter in the past one year. Remind you that I may be wrong), but you may be a bit disappointed if you aim to keep your children to have a certain standard of French. Especially, your children can communicate fluently in French already.
For what I know about DBS is that their French standard is really just so so. My friend's son is doing F1 in DBS. I would have thought their French level must have reach a certain standard since they would have studied French for at least 6 yrs before they go to F1. Well, the case is definitly no. My friend's son have never taken any French before but he can still keep up with the F1 French level. They are still learning something very basic, like for beginners. Plus you can not take Chinese once you have admitted to French boys. You may take selective French lesson but that is no more than learning in any of the learning centre. Not to mention the French level in the other schools that you have mentioned.
You may also realize the children that learn French in the learning centre does not have a very good standard unless the children really practice the French that they have learned from the class. Hence, having a good french learning program does not really works that well because of the level of the class. Unless every single student learn French seriously and practice with their parents who can speak French at home.
Hence, you may reconsider of selecting French stream primary school as your first pirority (it is ideal but sometimes it does not work that well in reality) as selecting a good school may be more important in your case.

dear hazelle,
you are right on that point. i have visited dbs on the open day and have talked with the responsible teacher of french steam madame Boniface, and she already told me that the best way is still send Camill to Lycee Francais if we want our sons able to learn properly french. but then their chinese will not be considerably good neither... to be or not to be.... that is the question...
finally what i decided with my wife is that we aim for EMI school at the 1st place so my wife can follow the curriculum of our sons during these years, and they will prefect their languages skill other way (e.g send them to their grand-parents during summer time ).
there are actually quite a lot english primary schools, and i do think most of them are good. then the question is, will Camill be smart or lucky enough to get into one of them.

may i ask you if you can share experience about how did you prepare your daughter for the interviews and how did they go actually these interviews?!
thanks a lot in advance!!!

Dear Stanley,
I know Camil speak French and Cantonese. May I ask whether he speaks very fluent English as he is studying in Tivoli international section? (I saw your post). You know my daughter was also studying in Tivoli international section when she was 1.5yr to 3yrs.
If Camil can speak very fluent English, he is definitely in an advantage in getting in DBS (this is only my personal view). DBS can have their interview conducted in English. They also like French speaking child. Your son definitely fit the criteria.
I did not really prepare anything very special for my daughter, just like all the other parents and probably not as good even. However, I did let my daughter to take the interview course during the summer time. Though I still went on a trip during the summer vacation. The interview course worked well on my daughter but I must remind you that it did not really work on every kids. It depends on the character of the children. One point that it worked well on my daughter was that they had mock exams for the interview. I always thought my daughter should have been OK for the P1 interview and I took the interview course just in case. I thought the interview questions are pretty straight forward anyway. They video the whole interview process and I was totally shocked when I saw the DVD after the mock exam. It waked me up and I did everything to correct all her mistakes in the following two months before the real interviews. I do not know whether my information helps.:loveliness:

know more about "le quatorze juillet"

Bastille Day is the French national holiday, celebrated on 14 July each year. In France, it is called Fête Nationale ("National Celebration") in official parlance, or more commonly le quatorze juillet ("14 July"). It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution.
