Hello, I am a new member. Please forgive me if my questions below are not appropriate.
(Sorry, I don't know how to input Chinese characters on the computer. That 's why I can only communicate with you in English.)

The principal, Ms. Lam, is a very good and professional educator.  I do trust her professionalism. I like her books as well. I also  believe that all kids like her and she can  stimulate the kids to develop their potential to the full in YW.  My son attended the 2nd interview last week.  He asked if he would be able to study in YW because he liked the Principal so much ! Ha ha.. I don't know his chance.. Let us see on 24/11.

However, YW's MOI (medium of instruction) for all subjects is Chinese except for the English subject but YW College's MOI is English. I worry if the kids can get used to the new environment in the colleage when they leave the primary school. I 'll be very grateful if any parents can advise the English standard of YW Primary School (e.g., performance/ standard of the English Teacher, Syllabus of the English subject - too easy or not in comparison with other schools (local or English school like St. Joesph - Choi Shek Lane).  Do your kids need to read English stories regularly and share with other kids in the class?

Secondly, have you heard any news or plan that YW Primary School will change to a English school in the future (even in the long run). Personally, I hope it will take place in day. Have any parents of YW kids discussed that with the principal ?

Thank you for your help.

English standard is not built in one day.  School is NOT the only media.  In my experience, family plays more important role than school if you want your kids to build up a good english standard.  For instance, always read english books with your kids.

Besides, some subjects are not suitable to use English, for instance, Mathmatics requires students to understand the concept.  General Studies teaches students group discussion in order to widen mind, their way of thinking, etc.  Mother touge is as such an advantage.  However, school is doing very well, for instance, teaching students most Maths' english term and giving english worksheets.  In higher form, should be P.4 up, an english Maths exercise book.
At the beginning I was worried if he could handle this exercise book or not.  In fact, after 3 years' Maths' english term and worksheet training.  He's able to do this english Maths book by his own.

So if you trust Mrs Lam and YWPS' teachers, don't worry so much.  Otherwise, you should consider an International school instead.  Hope info could help.

Boboviviyi , thanks very much for your fruitful advice.

Sorry, just one more question...
Do you any idea about the number of the YW Primary School graduates (who left the school in July 2008) who didn't study in YW College.  Where did they go?

Thanks again for the information.

One to Renaissance College and one to Queen's College.

Are they your target secondary schools?

JP,

Thank you for your information.

I always try to strike a balance between activities and study for my son. Without strong academic performance, I worry if he may not be able to get into a good secondary school in support of his future study. However, he may be afraid of the school if it is a very strong academic workshop. I cant deny that it is very difficult for me to strive a balance when seeking a school for my son.

My friend's son has been studying in a very famous boys school DXX (Primary) at Mong Kok. As told, the teachers didn't work very well - they didn't teach too much but the exam covered a lot ; all parents are expected to teach their
kids a lot at home.
Of course, there is no doubt that parents should help their kids to overcome any difficulties and monitior their study progress closely. However, if teachers work with love and actively help students to overcome the difficulty and the school is well above average, it would be my choice.

If YW College is well above average, I prefer him to go on his study in the same place provided that he can get a seat in YW P1 !

Regarding QC, I
guess it is a pure academic workshop. (Please correct me if it is not.)

For RC, it quite new to me. I found that some
parents on the forum considered RC and St. Joseph (Choi Shek Lane, Kowloon) asthe same peers. Are they really the same in terms of the academic standard, school activities and quality of teacher and student?

Thank you.

don't worry to the English Standard too much and all English lessons are delivered in English.  Moreover, two NET classes a week.

The standard of children are varied and I agree home play the big part.  Do more home tutoring and kid should pick up this language really quickly.

Hello, seniors,
My son has also attended the 2nd interview. I  heard 'YW Colleage' during my childhood. The English standard should not be below average.  My son also tried  聖若瑟 (彩石里) and 高主教. Do you think YW's English standard is the highest among them?
If possible, I 'll take YW or 高主教 because the HKCEE results of  聖若瑟 中學(彩石里) was not  good ( I was told by my friends after the interview.).  Will you take YW or 高主教?

I am not senior.

For the recent academic assessment on four subjects, i.e. Chinese, English, Maths and General Knowlage,

kind of relieve for the 1st test in YW.

During English assessment, it comprises of comphrehension(4-5 lines and two stories).  MC, composition on describing a person in picture(5 lines), M/C of a story book taught in class, fill in the blank.  It has about 8 pages examination(pls correct me If I am wrong others YW parents).

I don't know the other school doing but I find YW's English is not on average.  The math is famous too and all teaching materials are tailor made inhouse with consultation to professor in colleage.

Smartcar.

Thank you for your opinion.

1. As said, YW's English is not on the average.
Do you mean that YW's English is "above" the average?

2.Will YW's add English terms in the teaching materials for Maths and General Knowledge ? starting from P3 or P4 ?

Thank you.

I don't worry to the English standard in YW.  Considering the progress so far, I am sure there will be composition before the end of P.1.  For the English content in P.1, it already covers the required material for that age.  I don't see any benefit if English extents to G.E. or Math., provided that the standard is already high.  Friend of mine's kid is studying in LS and we compare the English syllabus on P.1.

The result is more or less the same.

dimmy, seems you are serious about english standard.

I saw phonics material on my son's P.1 english hw.  however, I don't see there is a lot coverage and you may join phonics class after school..if you want to brush up this skill.
