They're really big boys and girls this year, the eldest in school. Wish every kid can get into an ideal and good primary school.

I didn't stay in the classroom as I didn't know I had to. And, the classroom was too crowded. Was there any briefing ? Can you share ?

Like last year, all parents stayed to watch the kids for a while and then the teachers gave us a brief oeverview of the cirriculum of the year. Actually, you didn't miss much today coz the stuff the teacher said were stuff we already knew. To her, maybe something new and she thought we had not heard before. So you just missed the little part that the kids took turns to introduce themselves.

Thanks. Cheuk Yan's mom also told me a bit about the class yesteray. As usual, it was a bit of a mess. Btw, when I walked across the classroom of K2B this year, I noticed that there were only about 15 kids.

The PE classes are all full, K3A has 30 students. Actually, there are 2 new students in K2B too. One is from last year (Japanese boy, coz they have to wait until April next year to get into P.1) and another new girl.

I have finished almost 70% of the portfolio. Actually, I will try not to make a "thick book" for Hei Ching this time. I remembered I had prepared a 60-pages portfolio for my elder girl 5 years ago. ha ha...really crazy....Anyway, my target is to complete it in August....

Hi all,
Anyone can share the circular about "Snacks and Birthday Party" with me ? I cannot find it in Hei Ching's folder and also....in LH's web site. If my memory is correct, Miss Chow said it should be held on 1st Friday of each month. But...how about the party date for August ? Hei Ching will be very unhappy to cut the birthday cake at school with school uniform.....he he....

Wow.....the kids got 3 pieces of homework today and my girl took about an hour to finish....However, my girl enjoys her K3 life very much....Anyway, GOOD START.....

Wish our kids can get a place in a good+suitable school....

Couldn't go out today.  Quite boring if you have to stay at home all day.

Yet, the wind in Kln City was not very strong though it rained a lot.  How about the other districts ?

I went to the briefing session, so did a lot of the parents (actually more K2 parents than K3). Anyway, I arrived early so I could talk to the teachers for some time. They told us about the new cirriculum. For chinese, they'll continue have more writing, sentences later and dictation. For english, they stop using Letterland (from K2) and they use synthetic phonics? No idea but they said they'll learn more diagrahs(blending of sounds) so they know how to pronounce words by themselves. For math, they'll do calculations within 20 (+/-).
One of the main concern is the principal. Miss Lee Chung Ping will continue to be the acting principal until a suitable one can be found (which they said won't be a short period of time).
Other moms, please fill in if I miss anything important.

Actually I'm glad to get a day off coz I missed it last time as I wasn't in HK. Preston went to play with his next door friend for a while and we went to a movie. The rest of the day is just watching Olympics.

Oh, you did go out yesterday.

I submitted the application to Ying Wa on Thur & my number was 1516. I guess at the end they might have received over 1700 applications.

Definitely not easy to get in. Over 1700 applications with only 150 seats. I worried about going through 3 interviews. Not much confident in this school, just give it a try.

I think for more popular schools there will be only around 10% chance. Don't worry too much now. It's still early & Ying Wa is among one of the schools with the earliest deadline of application. It's just one of the choices. Right ?!

Would you join the speech festivals? I'm still considering. I think it's a good opportunity for the kids but we have to train them which may be a bit difficult. Which one will you join?

Davin had attended courses of performing arts but he was not keen on it. He knew he had to memorize the poem. I won't force him to do so at this stage though I agree it's a good chance.

I will help Hei Ching to join the speech festival and will pick the Chinese poem in Cantonese. Since the school will not provide any training, maybe I will ask my elder girl's speech tutor to train my little one also.

Anyone will join the speech festival ? Please share your choice. Moreover, I would like to know if the school will join the group speech (集誦).

I'll let Preston join the other 2 that Hei Ching does not join. I'll do the English by myself (I used to join the speech festival for several times b4) but it's difficult to train your own kid. As for mandarin, I'll ask the private mandarin teacher to help him. Although I don't have much confidence Preston will even go up on stage and perform, I'll still let him try. You have to let them kids try b4 you know if they can do it. It's a good chance to build their confidence.

Preston is getting a bit better with the Chinese homework, he can finish by himself. But I still think the Chinese homework is quite difficult for them.

I asked Davin if they needed to use that 筆順簿 at school & he said they didn't use that book.  Perhaps it's for use by the parents & the kids at home.

It's good that you go on the last day so you can get more info beforehand.
You don't need to enrol for the DBS briefing session, but I guess there will be a lot of people.

I don't think APS will arrange briefing session for parents. You can simply send a stamped envelope to the school and obtain an application form. F.Y.I.: they need to process more than 2000 applications every year and the number of P1 seats is about 160 (1/3 will be reserved for the graduates from Alliance Kindergarten). The competition is very keen and I don't think my little girl is lucky enough to get a seat....worry...

Maybe it's not a good idea to bring Davin, coz there will be a lot of people and the briefing session will last for 1 1/2 hour plus the waiting time, the whole time maybe more than 2 hours. It may be too long for Davin. However, it's good to bring the kid to look at the school first.

What did you kids bring for 'time on stage' today for the 1st time? Preston did not want to do this in the beginning but he ended up bringing a story book.

Have you seen the memo from the school website about the schools that K3 2008 graduates go to.  It can be a good reference for us.

Lydia, if I remember from what I read, there's only 1 kid going to DBS & just a few kids to Ying Wah (less than 10 ?).

Everyone lined up in the playground and were led by parent volunteers to the hall. They're very on time, so make sure arrive on time. The whole interview lasted for ~1 hour and the parents picked the kids up in the hall again. Every kid will get a chance to meet the principal. Preston will have the 2nd interview on Friday and need to leave early for it.

Hi all,

Sorry for my reply. Let's me give you all some information for Alliance Primary School, Kln Tong.

- Private & Christian primary school
- Large class size (~40 students)
- They have NET to teach Phonics
- Good in music and have "strong" Orchestra teams
- Teach Chinese in potunghua
- Teach Mathematics in Chinese
- Very few homeworks in P1 to P4...sorry that my elder girl is now P5 and I don't know if it will be more this year. Students are no need to do a lot of homework during long holiday.
- 2 tests + 2 exams every year
- No "精英班"
- The single-block campus is shared with kindergarten and primary school. Just my personal opinion, APS does not have a very big campus.
- According to the school information, only 1 P6 graduate cannot get into an English Secondary school this year (as of Aug, 08). i.e.: over 99% P6 students can have a seat in Eng. Sec. School.

If I have missed anything that you would like to know, please feel free to tell me....

Were there more people attending DBS briefing vs SPCC ? The briefing of DBS this morning caused traffic jam in Mongkok.

Davin were fine during the briefing. Actually, he was interested to look at the presentation material from time to time.

We're amazed that Davin could be so patient throughout the whole briefing session. Preston would have kept asking why take so long and complaining it's so boring.
Actually, the briefing session in SPCC was far more people than DBS (actually, I couldn't really see the back today, maybe there were many people at the back?). I guess coz there were 2 sessions and only boys parents would come compared to SPCC which are suitable for both sex.
What do you think about DBS?

The info presented actually is not new to me. Not taking its fame into consideration, the teaching concept of DBS is of course very good. Not much homework but yet the kids are very good at writing & reading. Yet, it's really really difficult to get into the school. What do you think then ?

St. Margaret is English school. Students learn Spanish, French,and Japanese. But, I am worried about the image of the girl school before. The campus is too small.
This is very surprised. My friend said that her friend's son withdrawal CKY in p3 because it is not too good. That let me very surprised.

Do you know why your friend quit CKY? I really want to know coz I'm quite interested in this school.

Do you know what happened to Ms. Chow today? Preston said she had something else to do and did not teach them today but she's at school. That's why there is no Chinese homework today. It's not good that the teacher is always absent from class and the kids are missing classes which means they're learning less. If this happens again, we may need to take some actions or reflect to the school.

On Tues, even Ms. chow was at school, according to Preston, she was not teaching them. Preston said she was busy doing something else at school and not in class. She did not have enough patience to kids. As far as I know, a lot of parents are not satisfied with her.

I'm really worried about our kids this year. Both teachers are not as good as we expect. Although Mr. Creamer is a bit better and teaching the kids stuff, he needs a good partner to do the job. Like today, Preston is reading the same English book for the 3rd week(I wrote a note to Mr. Creamer and he did not read it and Preston's reading report from last week was still in the bag) and this book Preston had read it 3 times last year as well which I had mentioned to Mr. Creamer.
As for Ms. Chow, Hei Hei's mom also not satisfied with her. She doesn't know the personality of each kid and uses wrong way to communicate with the kids. It's very crucial this time of the year, not to discourage the kids as they need to go for interviews. It's a lot to write here, but we have to keep a very close eye on this issue and may take some actions if things got worse.

I talked to the other parents this morning & I can conclude that at least one book is chosen by the school & the kids have to read that book for at least 3 weeks. All of us received worksheet of that book in the 2nd & 3rd week.

We go to 2nd interview in HKBUWKF. This is very stress for me. If the interview fail, that mean the poor interview of the parents. I am guilty of my poor performance. I cannot concentrated on the interview just like dreaming.I am on night-shift in this month and I am very exhausted. I haven't to sleep for 24hrs before the 2nd interview and we are car crash .What are pity for me!

Today , I apply RS. Many people discuss the DBS.I think the application date was very crowded.
Why do all schools crowd with parents?
Parents are poor and harsh.

You do apply more than one school in HK side. At this moment, I haven't thought of applying any DSS or private school in HK side.

It's very difficult to get into DBS but I won't lose anything if I just give it a try.

Really sorry for the late reply. If any of you would like to apply for APS and have already sent an self-addressed envelope for an application form, you'll receive it not later than next week. The submission deadline should be around 23 / 24 Oct and the interview date will be 6 Dec, 08.
