Hi,
我個女今年升k2.想問一下聖瑪加利小學interview時會問d乜?另我的英文程度好鬼水皮，校長/老師會用乜語言同家長 & 小朋友交談?

My boy has attended for the interview for around 1 hr last yr. Most time of the interview, as said by my boy, was conducted in English, except the part for Chinese.

As I known, there's NO connection between St. Margaret Co-edu and your previous St. Margaret Girls' school.

All results depend on kids' performance during interview.

Hence, the most crucial factor for interview is ENGLISH standard of your kid. Well prepare for it if u really wish yr kid to be their primary student.

If we're offered a second interview, would that be okay if only one parent goes (since the other one has to go work)? Would that affect the result?

I think it is better both of them are going cos I remember on last year's interview, the head teacher asked us what time we will go back home everyday. Probably, they expect you to have more time with the students.

你會幾時 second-interview? 小女於2007年10月second-interview,即今年9月將會入讀小一,但我們那次是second-in就可即交留位費，我都見到有淨係媽媽或淨係爸爸(是外國人)去見，不過佢地見遲過我，所以唔可以100%肯定佢地是否同我一樣。

我覺得如果真係好想入sm讀, 無謂到埋門一腳先脫腳, 最好都係兩個一齊去, 因為有得2nd interview已經係好大機會.

My girl 1st interview at 23 June, and 2nd interview at 27 June. My husband and I went with her in 1st interview but only interviewed my girl. Both of us just waiting outside. So, I attended the 2nd interview alone as my husband thought that same as 1st interview. Anyway, my girl luckily got an offer after interviewed. So, pls don't give up.

Thanks for your encouragement. However we still haven't received any call for 2nd interview till now. Actually the school called us to attend the 1st interview the same day as you (June 23) but we couldn't make it. So our interview had been rescheduled to June 28. It's good for you to get the acceptance in a few days. I think our chance is turning slim since it's more than a week already and we still haven't received any news!

My girl told me that she forgot 3 things on the desk and couldn't tell the teacher. Not sure if she's failed...Also, when I answered the questionnaire for the parents, I wrote down that my girl is lack of confidence...perhaps this makes our application failed as well...

Don't worry, I think still have a chance as the Sept school fee balance will be paid by 2 Aug. So, there may have a release seat after that date.

Just asked my girl and she told me she didn't exactly remember all, but she just tried to answer what she remembered. However, she told me she recognized all the chinese wording cards and knew how to match them, just as 春+天. Also, one maths question, e.g. 2+2+4=8.

你唔駛咁灰心既, 8月2日要交學費, 到時d新生家長就要決定讀唔讀, 唔多唔少會有d位放返出嚟既. 你不妨打多幾個電話去學校留意下個情況, 如果佢地肯比你interview多一次, 咁機會就會大d, 因為舊年in既時候小朋友始終仲係細, 又無經驗, 如果今年有機會in多次, 應該會好d既, 盡力爭取吓啦.

不過就算結果係唔得都唔好懷疑個囡既能力, 因為sm每年只收80人, 位真係好少, 當中有20%(今年可能仲多d)係收外籍人士, 實際收中國人都係64個左右, 競爭真係好大.

唉,你地都收到2nd interview通知了? 我仲未有呀!

我仔仔18号去first interview的! 他是下午两点第一个进去in的! 不知道是不是因为后边排的是一个差仔, 我仔仔从进去到出来前后只用了8分钟?! 敢快in完我真的好意外!

仔仔话房里边只有一个主任,完全用广东话对答! 只问了几个中文词语, 做了几句中文句子,就让他出来了! 普通话,英文,数学都没考!......我仔仔系上海读国际学校,那都是他的强项,反而广东话就讲得有D卡住卡住

过了两天我打点话去问大概什么时候有消息,接电话个小姐好有礼貌,但系话要一个月左右才会知道! 我想主动D,所以我寄了一封挂号信给校长希望她能考虑给仔仔个机会! 不过无收到任何Feedback, 以家已经3个星期啦! 好担心, 但beside等,可以点?

我而家唔敢抱太多希望了! 有时候呢D事能力是首要,但还要看看运气的! Besides this, 我都有犯错, 我叫仔仔老师用什么话问,你就用什么话答! 仔仔说他所有问题都能答, 礼貌也Ok, 就是走时无把櫈子放好...... 但我估可能他十句里边带一两个字普通话,所以印象分没了!  而且果日主任无问英文数学普通话, 后边又有个差仔做比较,我地连运气都输埋喇!

老婆安慰我说仔仔从前读international school自由惯了,以家有间严D口既学校收他,让他乖D! 这样也未尝不是好事......我心里不认同, 仔仔自由惯了= 现在仔仔每事跟我讲道理, 现在要他做填鸭我才怕影响他发展!  但而家无choice, 我也不想为了这事情不开心,也给仔仔压力, 固无从认对!

如果係on " 08/09 P.1" waiting list, 据我所知，都有超過150人。因我個friend果囡囡都係 on waiting list, 佢亦每星期keep住call SM問 progress。每次佢都留底囡囡個名同埋number，希望有機會入到。

你可試試此方法！

Thanks all for your kind support. My daughter finally got the offer.

Hi G-Ma,

I've lots of questions to ask you. Hope you could be kind enough to answer me.

1) English subject
a) Textbooks
There’re no English textbooks for P.1. There’re school based thematic booklets instead. What are these booklets about?
b) Phonics
What kind of phonics is it? Is IPA being taught in P.1? Will tests & quizzes be given on phonics in P.1?
c) Readers
Are “Readers” English story books?

2) Mathematics
What are being covered in Maths & You (the textbooks)? Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication & division? Anything more than that?

3) Chinese
This subject concerns me most as it’s taught in PTH. PTH is just like a foreign language to my daughter. She must be feeling like a fish out of water during the Chinese lessons as the teacher must be like an alien to her. How can a student like my daughter catch up with the syllabus?

4) Modern Languages (French, Japanese, Spanish)
Will tests & quizzes be given on these “Modern Languages”? Will it be confusing for the students to learn (or taste I should say) 3 foreign languages at the same time?

5) Learning to learn
I know it’s about computer. Exactly what will be covered in this subject?

6) My Daughter
To be honest, my daughter is not a very smart & bright girl. Her Chinese is not very good while her English is just fair (no bun bun at home). Comparing with those smart native English or PTH speaking students, I really worry that she may lag behind and lose her confidence.

Anything I should/need to do for her during this summer holiday? Do I need to arrange private English & PTH training for her?

7) P.1 Parents’ Briefing Session
After attending the P.1 parents’ briefing session (mainly hosted by Ms. Lee (原來我個名同佢只有一個字唔同, how interesting), I’ve a feeling that P.1 students’ school life is very busy but interesting. Is my perception correct? In your opinion, do students have a hard time adapting to P.1?

Hi Flying-man,

I can feel that you are a caring parents and wanted to make your kid being well prepared for P.1.

1) English subject
a) Textbooks
School will use their own materials for English subject.  Each term they will have different topics. As I remembered in P.1 it should be "my school", "my Friend", "Haloween", "Animals"......etc.  The topics will be something that the kids are familiar with and have interest in.  So, don't worry they will enjoy it.

b) Phonics
They will teach IPA in S.1.  For P.1 they will only teach Phonics which is much simple than IPA.  There will be no specific test & quiz for phonics, but may have evaluation in class.

c) Readers
School has a system to evaluate student reading and pronunciation skill, they have a set of booklets in different levels and will hand out to students during the term.

2) Mathematics
In P.1 math should be including addition, subtraction, shape, coins, the largest and the smallest........etc.

3) Chinese
Don't worry, teacher will not use PTH all the time at the begining of the Chinese lesson.  For main/important points, teahcer will give Cantonese explanation at the first term. They will give time for kids to get use to the PTH teaching.  My daughter also didn't know much PTH in her P.1 but she could cathc up without any problem.  Just trust in your kid, they have ability to handle it.

If you are really worry about it, it is no harm to give her some PTH summer courses during this holiday.  Just let her has basic concept about PTH is more than enough.

4) Modern Languages (French, Japanese, Spanish)
No, there are no test or quiz for modern languages.  They just want kids to have fun and have some concept with new languages.  P.1 will only cover very simple stuffs such as number, colour, greeting....etc.  So, I believe they will not confuse.

5) Learning to learn
Just learning how to use computer, how to search information via internet.

6) My Daughter
SM is not a very pushing school, so you will not have much pressure in P.1.  I can see SM is trying to give all students chances to perform themselves and everyone is equal. I think the most important thing is to make your daughter feel happy and enjoy her P.1 school life.  Don't give too much pressure on her and yourself.  SM had admitted your daughter that mean she is well qualified and I am sure that she will catch up without any problem.

7) P.1 Parents’ Briefing Session
To me, my daughter P.1 was not busy comparing with other outside schools.  But of course, when you getting into a new place, you still need some times to adapt.  To my daughter, she didn't has any hard time in her P.1 .

Wish your daughter has a great and memorable P.1 school life!

I have asked the same question to Ms. Lee before and she said if the students' result reach their standard and with good conduct, they will promote to Secondary directly.

No, they never mention about the %. However, I think they do want to accept as many as possible since all the students should be well equipped by SM in Primary section. There are no reasons for school to give up them in Secondary. Unless the students' result and conduct are really bad.

On the one hand, I really want my daughter to master good English (especially oral) and PTH by studying in SM while on the other hand, I worry that she may not have the ability to handle the school work in SM.

P.1 is a honey moon period, no exam and not much pressure.

As long as your daughter is excited for the new school life then everything will be fine.

One more question to see if you could advise. As far as I know, it'll have two class teachers from P1 - P3 only. So, how about start from P4? If it has one Chinese teacher to be their class teacher only, I suppose the other subjects conducted in English will be taught by NET (including ABC, BBC or CBC). Am I right?

Yes, there should be only 1 class teacher in P.4 and they may be Chinese. But for sure that English lesson will be conducted by NET teacher.
