What is IB Diploma?

Local students who take A-level exams apply universities
through the JUPAS. Other students, including students
from international schools, apply through non-JUPAS.
Of course, as JUPAS is adminstrated by the Education
Bureau, the whole admission exercise is standardized.
On the other hand, different schools or even departments
can admit non-JUPAS applicants differently.

IB stands for International Baccalaureate and it is a
curriculum recognized by many schools worldwide.

我之前識個女仔佢中學係讀kgv架
佢個時好似考gce o-level同a-level
經non-jupas apply hku 醫科
因為我識佢個時佢已經係year 5啦
佢媽咪話好開心個女識醫, 可以由細到大都係身邊
又可以得到等同外國的中小學教育

It also depends on how competitive the targeted degree programme is. There is no definite answer.

Local universities actually prefer students from international school than from local schools. One that I know actually give prority to international school students who have weaker public exam grades than local students who have better grades.

One particular case I know is that one girl who got 1B, 1C and !D from A-L exam from a UK high school got into a very competitive business program which would definitely turn down any local candidates with the same grades.

Sorry, cannot tell you which uni cause it's too political.

My understanding was that local students apply through JUPAS and other students (including local international schools) have to apply through non-JUPAS. I would have thought that they are 2 different systems of application procedures.

However, I do agree that the lecturers themselves do like students from international schools a lot more. At least, this is what I heard from a few lecturers I know, and there have been a few newspaper articles saying the same thing.

Dear all,

I have heard of some similar comments from other parents: local Us make generous offers to IS students or oversea students (i.e. non-JUPSA applicants).

Last year, my boss's daughter was offerred a place (Degree in English something ) from one of the top three local U at the conditional offer of 1 B & 1 E from her UK 'A' Level results. Finally, met with the requirements but she did not take the offer & she stayed in UK.

If the U intends to become 'internationalization', those oversea/IS student may be indication to someone though I do not totally agree.

"Internationalization" is an objective and strategic initiative of the Universities in HK now. Not only foreign students, IS students, they use all means (e.g. scholarship) to attract mainland students also.

my husband's niece graduated from CIS (IB) 4 or 5 years ago. I think she got straight A's in her O-level (UK, not HK). She applied to CUHK and HKU to study for medicine, but was rejected. Depending on what program the student applies, the university may have preference to local school graduates. Medicine is one of them.

BTW, she ends up going to one of the top 10 universities in the US and is now working in Wall Street.
