What's wrong with the school? My daughter is in K1. She has great improvement in her English, and she became
more confident and outspoken. My daughter and I are
happy with this school.

Dear Karina,
So happy to see what you write.
It is because my kid will go to this kinder soon but some people tell me that the teachers are not caring enough and some even say that they don't teach in the school.
You know, it really upsets me since I have turned down some good kinder for hoping to secure the esf pri interview.
I will be grateful if you will share some more about the school.
Thanks a lot.
作者: karinamama 時間: 08-4-26 21:28 標題: 回覆 #3 orancarmen 的文章
I have the same concern when the term just begun. I thought the teachers were not caring enough, especially my girl was shy and dependent. But it turns out everything was okay, I think the teachers just want to train the kids to be independent and to do things by themselves. My daughter was more confident now and very outspoken.
Regarding teaching, the school teaching philosophy is "learn through play", so the teachers will not teach them to write or read. Most of the time they just play in school. But the kids will have some learning experience that you cannot find in local kinder. Like this month they have a topic "life cycle". The teachers read books and sing songs regarding tapoles and frogs, caterpillers and butterflies. They also went to the Lion Park to see tapoles, dragonfiles, sunflowers, vegetables etc.
So the teaching method of international kinder is very different from local kinder, whether it is a good school or not depends whether you can accept the school teaching philosophy.
Good luck.

Hi karinamama
What is the ratio of foreign student and Chinese student? I've heard that Abacus got more foreign student, will there be racial discrimination on Chinese student with mother tongue in Cantonese?
Hi Orancarmen
What kind of "bad" rumor did you hear?
I am still struggling if it is a correct move to put my son in Abacus in the coming Sept(even I've paid the deposite). I love the philosophy of learn thro' play...since my hushand and I were bring up by local school. There are lots of uncertain / unknown for us.
作者: orancarmen 時間: 08-5-2 15:22
Hi Karina & Cindy,
First of all, thank you for your response.
After my unofficial research(haha...), I think it is true that all depends on what you believe in. It is really quite different , I mean the teaching philosophy. Some people will give very extreme bad comment, while some will point out the fact only.
That is, you want your child to be taught and moulded or let them explore by themselvesf and consolidate in a quite natural way.
People say that in the early stage, parents maybe upset but later, you know, later, you will have great surprise because what the kids learned is not from reciting & teaching, instead, they learnt through practise and experience.
The above opinion is what I heard from friends & webs, only for sharing among parents, not a professional comment.
And any other opinions are welcom & appreciated.
作者: karinamama 時間: 08-5-2 15:31
In my daughter's class 40% are chinese and the rest are foreigners. I don't see racial discrimination as the kids mixed together quite well. If you son mainly speak Cantonese, you better speak more English to him, otherwise no one understands him in school.

hi karina,
It's really kind of you for sharing your experiences with us.
may i know something about the school bus route and the snack time arrangement? Many thanks!
Hi Cindy,
I also paid deposite already.
Your kid will go to k1, right?
Am or Pm class?
Let's keep in touch and share, Ok?
You can pm me if necessary.
And May I know which district you live?
Maybe can let the kids know each other b4 term start if they are in the same class. Haha...
I really hope so.
作者: karinamama 時間: 08-5-2 17:25
There are 3 bus routes.
No. 1 pick up kids in TKO and UST
No. 2 pick up kids around Sai Kung Town centre
No. 3 pick up kids around Clear Water Bay.
For details, pls ask the bus lady.
The kids have about 15 mins snack time. They need to bring in their snack and drink everyday and they are encouraged to put away after they are finished.

Does Abacus require much parents involvement? Such as picnic/outing/party, small "reseach" project...
Do you give additional Chinese classes to your daughter? Or do you teach her by yourself?
thank you very much!!
作者: karinamama 時間: 08-5-3 09:24
The school encouraged parent involvement. You can sign up as a parent helper and sit in class to help once a month.
The school has two outings each year and parties during X'mas, CNY which will invite parents to participate.
I teach Chinese to her by myself. I bought the local kinders exercise books to teach her.

my 4 year old daughter is using since last year.... we well noted that there is 80% deet. You may not well understand how terrible will be in Abacus. After the 1st day, you will use it... make sure you kid do not always put his hands or other part of his body into his month... take a bath at once after return home, and do not apply on hands, but should put other mild baby used repellent + electronic repellent in his pocket + no short pants + white t-shirt or very light weight white long sleeves shirt preferrable. Then hopely you can win the war.

I also used swisso baby, but not always works, especially on her face and forehead, even on her eyebrow. From

because I am not dare to put to much on her face.
To KCPAPA: Do you know where can I still buy the white color T-Shirt? Many thanks.

about white color t-shirt...isn't that they have to wear school uniform.
I am thinking of letting my son to put on 白色底衫 for the summer program. (I guess you can still get it from Marks and spencer)
After the mosquito bite, I went home immediately. I try everything on the mosquito bite and they doesn't work until I put SOAP on. My son stop scratching them and they stop swelling. And I found "寶貝濕疹膏"is quite good for after bite.

I think no uniform is required for summer course. Anything can keep out of Mosquito will do. Not really exactly white t-shirt, can have some print on it.

Yes, for the regular kindergarten student, they need to
wear blue color school Polo shirt as uniform. However,
I saw some kids wear white color school Polo shirt. I

tidy up 的時候,真係每個小朋友都tidy up。

Hi orancarmen,
Did you received a plastic envelop on parent orientation day ?? It have a sticker on it and list all info for the first week class arrangement.
As I know, one am class schedule below,
28th Aug and 1st, 3rd and 5th Sept are so-called start dates those kids will seat in small groups. 8th Sept, all student will start together.
Different student may have different schedule.
About the school bus service, you should check with Kitty Lee, all student must accompany with adult but not on their own on the first day to school.
Hope you can solve it soon.

Hi Carmen,
My son will be in K1 Bear (am). The Fun N Games just ended today. I could see that all kids (well, except my son) enjoyed it very much, especially the cooking of pizza, water game. I guess my son seems not to be enjoying it so much because he doesn't understand English. Guess I should speak to him in English more at home. Luckily, there is a teaching assistant (don't know her name though). She has been so patient and kind to the kids and she tries to get every kids involved in every games.
Do you have any idea of how I can improve my son's English standard effectively?

Hi Lilian
My son was in the Summer class last week.
The first 2 days, he was so excited to go to school. He woke up an hour earlier before he needed to.
But on Friday, he didn't want to go to school. (he ended up staying at home.) I guess he didn't have friends to play with and he missed his former schoolmate. I asked if he prefered his Nursery or Abacus. He said his nursery. He said he was having fun in Abacus and teachers were nice. He loves Mei ling.
Then on Mon and Tue, he was so happy when was home. Sometimes he started to speak a bit English when he is playing by himself.
He was having so much fun after Tue. class, he kept talking and talking.
Kids will be easily adapt new environment, so don't worry.
What I am doing now is... I told my son that, people in abacus speaks English. We are having 1 hour a day for English play time. (can be reading story, drawing, playing playdough/car...whatever HE want) During English play time, when he speak in Cantonese, I try to translate it into English. Most of the time he will repeat with me.
ps. My son will be in PM class

I guess I know who you are. You kid is Clarence who was so excited to see you and his little sister last Monday when you went to pick him up after class!

Hi Cindy & Lilian,
Sorry for my late response.
Let me update our record first

Cindy :K1 pm
Carmen : K1 Panda am
My first day will be on 28 August 2008.
Are you all the same?
Have you bought the school uniform already?
Since I haven't joined the fun game, I wonder is there really a lot of mosquitos?
Are you satified about the school environment ?
I think if we can let the kids meet and play b4 they starts the school, it's really nice. The only problem is that maybe difficult to compromise the date and time. I think it's quite good to share among the parents because we cannot help worrying whether the kids can adapt well or not, as well as how the school routine runs.
Regarding the kid's eng ability, in my case, I let him to join the playgroup in admality since he was 2 and 6 months old. And in my plan, later, I will enrol l the eng sat course running by efs in kln junior school. Some of my friends tell me it's good to let the kids having one whole morning, about 3 hours with the foreiger teacher. I don't know whether it will help or not, but I will try.
Thank you for your sharing in advance.

Dear all,
Would u mind to let me know if i want to let my son to study in Abacus (K1) next year. When should i submit my application (Sept 08 or Apr 09?)
Beside, do they guarantee to give a place for all kids to continue their study in Primary school?
Thx!!!
作者: LilianPang 時間: 08-8-12 14:13
Hi Carmen,
My son will start school on Aug 27. We will buy the uniform this weekend.
As for the school environment, I think it's ok though it's not too big with 4 classrooms. Really good that there are lots of trees and plants. Students are encouraged not to kill the bugs or do any harm to the natural environment. When attending the fun games in July, I saw a bunch of kids yelling at a big bug (looks like a cockroach). The teacher then went to the kids and asked them not to touch or hurt the bug though the kids keep yelling "kill it!" Then the teacher simply took the bug with a sweeper and put it on the soil.
There really are lots of mosquitoes. Make sure your kid puts on some repellent.
It would be a good idea for ESF Abacus moms and kids to get together. All depends on date/time/venue.

Hi Lilian,
It's really disappointed we are not arranged on the same day.
Anyway, I think later we will meet in the school since both of us are in the am class, though different class. Let's keep in touch and have information updated because it seems not many abacus parents here.
I've bought uniform already. The lady there advises us no need to buy the white shoes. Which brand of mosquito repellent you use? Do you think that it work? Do you need to take school bus?
I heard from my friends that there are a lot of foreigher in abacus so that children can pick up beautiful accent very fast. I don't know it's true or not. But really dream of it. Meanwhile, still cannot help worrying their chinese.
Poor parents!!! Non-stop worries!!!
作者: LilianPang 時間: 08-8-14 14:12
Hi Carmen,
My kid will take the school bus at Hang Hau (東港城). But before he and our maid get familiar with such "special" arrangement, I or my husband will accompany him on the bus ride for the fiirst few days. Your kid needs school bus service also?
As for the repellent, I simply use those "yellow square" ones, forgot the brand though. It's quite effective although none of them stays on the cloth when my kid's back home.
For the language issue, I myself am not that worried about my kid for not learning any good Chinese. I am planning to let him get training on Putonghua later on as soon as he picks up English (never mind the writing technique, I am grateful as long as he can pick up good conversational English). I believe learning Putonghua would effectively enhance Chinese writing and reading skills as we read and write Chinese in the same manner. Unlike Cantonese. For English, I have hired a new maid who speaks English and I have signed up an English course at the British Council for him. Plus, I have started to communicate with my son in English. THough sometimes, he looks a bit puzzled. Hope these work.
