My son is studing P.1 in local school. He did homework by himself everyday, he did extra worksheet before exam by himself also (because I had no time to do with him).
His exam result just OK in his class (around 70-80). I felt he's not so eager to learn (boring in school & no one with him). So I have an idea to transfer to internation school, because I hope he can learn under happy situation. Any
comments of RC? Is it hard to enter? Do you think it will
create interest to learn? see anyone can help..many thks

You may try but I think it's quite difficult as there is always along queue waiting listl. I think nowadays, kids from mainstream schools are difficult to enter IS because of their English standard. Requirement for P1 or P2 in IS is not that harsh but quite high for P.3 up. IF you make up your mind to change to IS, you'd better early than late.

My kid is from another IS so he has no difficulties in understanding English. The officer showed my son the paper he did in the written test and asked him to further explain on his writing. The atmosphere was like "chatting" rather than "testing" on how much he knew. For parents, we talked about IB curriculum and the role of parents. We felt very warm and welcomed by the school. So, no worries.

Is it too late to submit an application for Year 2 for the coming Aug (new school year)? Do they accept late applications? (I wonder) Does the school offer a test after receiving the application fee? (with no place though)
Are there any parents having their children transfer from Shatin Junior School to Renaissance College? Please share experience or comment on the change.
作者: fishfishma 時間: 08-4-10 14:05
I found this from the official website of RC:
http://www.renaissance.edu.hk/content.php?contentid=98
- Applications for admission to all year levels will continue to be received by the College for August 2008 academic year.
- Tests and interviews for applications received after the 25 February (Secondary) and 30 March (Primary) will be held in late April, 2008 or early May, 2008.
- RCHK Admissions staff will notify applicants if they are to be invited for a test and interview.
- Applicants will be advised of the date and time of the test and interview when contacted by RCHK Admissions staff.

My girl took the written assessment yesterday for Year 6.
1. My impression is that it is looking for types, needs & profile more than academic excellence. Am I right?
2. As RC advises, my girl, born in 1998, should apply year 6. Yet it turned out that the 1997ers formed the majority. So am I disadvantaged?
Please advise and thanks

i submit the application for my son for year 2 for 08/09 academic year in late march but it was lost in transit. i then resubmit the application last saturday and just call on tuesday for assessment on coming monday. looks like they are quite prepared to entertainment applications.
BTW, anyone can share what the assessment for year 2 is about? i understand it will be a written assessment and am a little worry because my son is studying in a local kinder which uses activity approach, that means he does very little writingand simple maths only.

Hi,
You don't need to "accompany the prince to read" every night like the dads and moms of children enrolling in a local school.
I cannot say for other grade as my girl is only attending G1. There is no homework at all at the beginning of the semester but we know that they had done a lot during class.
Starting from this semester more homework is given out but not everyday and they are easy to accomplish.
There will be one or two project for each unit during the semesters. The curriculum is divided into units eg the current unit is "living things and non-living things". Usually at the end of each unit students are required to complete a project on their own. (Parents are requested not to getting too involved in the work).
One of the things that I appreciate ESF is their success in nurturing a reading habit among the students. My girl is given a book every week and the level has been rising steadily. She loves to read book and we are very pleased to see her progress in developing the habit of reading. Besides, students are required to borrow a book from the liberary every week. They can choose whatever book they like.
The above is my experience perhaps other parents can share theirs.
Cheers

jjd,
I learned that some of my girl's classmates do attend tutorial classes (English, Chinese, music, dance etc.) after school.
To me, English tutorial is not necessary while Chinese could be a supplement to normal class. I am also planning to enrol my girl to a Chinese tutorial class.
My reason of putting my girl in RC is to avoid rushing for after school tutorials and I only ask her to attend one music and one drawing class after school in a week.
Perhaps Chinese parents ( I am also an ethnic Chinese) just cannot escape the curse of "more homework/activities breed brighter kids".
I just want my kid to have a happy student life although I won't let her fool around after school. Pressing for too much "achievements" on small children just not good.
Cheers,
Wingba
作者: almom 時間: 08-4-29 16:54
jjd,
I think we need to rethink what we want from our children and what kind of childhood life we want them to have.
We want them to learn, but at the same time be happy, right?
If we are stuffing their free time with all kinds of classes, we are in fact extending the school hours. Tired children seldom have quality sleep at night and the next day they would not be able to focus in class. Would too "full" a timetable or day give a negative effect to the learning or focusing ability at school?
If your child is really weak in a particular area and really need extra help (eg extra after school tutoring), I am sure your child's teacher will tell you. Until then, just relax.
We are parents of our children but when it comes to learning, I think teachers probably know the children better. But until the teacher points out that a child really need extra help, I think he is probably doing fine.
There is no need to follow what others are doing.
PS. I agree that many children would benefit if they are attending extra Chinese classes though.

Wingba & almom,
Thanks a lot for your valuable advice. I really like the teaching philosophy in IS and also hate the idea of a packed schedule for young children. That's why I have always planned to send my kid to IS ever since. But recently, I was told that some parents are sending Year One IS kids to after school English (Kumon English) and Maths (Kumon/Abacus) classes which surprises me a bit. I can appreciate why extra Chinese class is necessary though. I hate the culture in local schools where the kids' extra curricular activities are actually tuition/academically based lessons. But it seems this kind of culture is growing in IS which I find rather disappointing. I hope what I have heard is just the minority. I am glad that at least both of you share the same education perspective for our children. almom, you are totally correct in saying that one should not blindly follow what others are doing but sometimes, we just get influenced by the people around you. Thank you so much. I am feeling a lot better now.

Don't worry, that means your kid had really passed the test. The deadline for current students to reserve the place for 2008-09 will be June 2. I think the school is waiting to confirm how many places will be vacant for new students. Normally, the pass of the assessment test is valid for the whole academic year. In the case no place is available for your kid from the start of the year, there is still a chance to give you the offer if any student quits any time within the year.

As we have two sons this can put a strain on our finances. Has any parents in similiar situation consider putting siblings in different schools (i.e. one in IS and the other in Local)?

The hidden fees for primary students would probably be as follows:
School lunch : $25 x ~20 days = $500 p.m. (optional)
School bus : ~$800 p.m. (optional)
School Staionery fees : $2xx p.a.
PTA Membership fees: $200 p.a. (optional)
*RC parents pls correct me if I missed any items.
Many parents would send the kids to take Chinese (PTH) lessons. There are also some expenses for out-of-school activities like fees for learning musical instruments, other languages or sports. If you add up all these expenses together with the school fees, it really costs up to $10000 or more p.m. But these fees are not charged by RC.
RC emphasizes a lot on caring for people all over the world. The school raises funds a few times a year. Students may make zero donations or from a few dollars up.

Chinese text books: a few hundred dollars
Secondary school text books (excluding Chinese text books): ~$1200
Primary swimming (PE): a few hundred dollars for one year, for hiring additional life guard or instructor because of safety reasons (as per parents' request)
School uniforms: ~HK$1000
Government dental care program: $50 per year (optional)
Snacks money: (optional)
In addition to Saturn's list, these are probably what I have paid so far. Parents may want to judge on your own whether the money really goes to the school. In any case, depending on the money spending habit of individual family, I agree that it is fair enough if someone says you need to spare an additional amount of HK$10000 for each child per year.

Thanks for all the information.
My younger son will be 2yo in September and we've been searching kindergarten in the MA On Shan area. We've still to decide where to send him (IS or local). As I have alway studied in the UK I am not sure of the local HK education system and therefore unable to give any comment. Maybe some of the other parents can comment?
My ideal situation would be to send them both to IS school, if I can afford it. My main reason for wanting this is that the short time I've worked in HK, I found that the majority of HK Univisity graduates are very bright technically but are often let down by their standard of English.
BTW, does any parents know what kindergarten I should consider in order for him to progress to RC.
