復活節假前後，我們收到不少家長查詢，十分擔心小朋友在六月中的學校英科考試。按照我們的經驗，小學生學英文，最難掌握的是應用及文法，但學校英文科考試往往以應用及文法為主，尤其現時越來越流行的proofreading。

學一種外語，以能用這種外語和別人溝通為首要目的，當中包括講和寫，兩者都要多練習。詞彙的累積，要靠多讀多用；講得好，要靠多聽多說；要學好應用及文法，不能單靠強記死背，必須學得其法，活學活用。很多學生不明白英文文法的法規，常常有以中文的書寫方法來寫英文的陋習，在這裡與各位分享一些例子：

例一：老師認為學生未完成指派的功課，問學生：「You haven’t finished your project yet, have you?」學生們的確未做好功課，應如何回答？這裡經常出現錯誤：「Yes, we haven’t.」意即：是的，我們未做好。這是典型的中式英語，正確的回答應是：「No, we haven’t.」

例二：「used to」是描述過去經常做的事，例如：「I used to go fishing with my father every Sunday when I was a kid.」。但「used to」是沒有「現在式」的，不能用來描述現在常做的事，例如：「My mother uses to go to the market every day.」是錯的，正確的寫法應為「My mother goes to the market every day.」

例三：Articles的運用常令學生感到混淆，「I want to buy a new car.」而不是「I want to buy new car.」；「My professor is British.」而不是「My professor is a British.」；「My professor is an American.」而不是「My professor is American」；「Students usually find examinations difficult.」而不是「The students usually find examinations difficult.」

例四：時態（tense）的應用也常令學生感到混亂，如「現在式（present tense）」與「現在進行式（present continuous tense）」的使用：「They are now running to the school.」而不是「They now run to the school.」；「過去式（past tense）」與「過去進行式（past continuous tense）」的使用：「When I was watching the football game, my father came home.」而不是「When I watched the football game, my father came home.」

英文的應用及文法學得好，不單能直接提高學校英文科考試的分數，對英語寫作及會話亦大有幫助。
