Dear GSIS parents,

My daughter was born in 2004 and I will send the Y1 application for 2009. My questions are:
1. Any comment about the school year 1 programme?
2. When will the school finish daily. I heard that the school will start at 7:30am, what time will they finish?
3. Any after school activities for year 1 student? Is the school fee included or I need to pay for the extra fee?
4. How's the school bus service? Are you happy with it?

HI Christf,

Can you please tell me whether GSIS use traditional or simplified Chinese ? I know from Year 4 they offer 3 x Chinese lesson per week, but how is their Chinese standard, i mean in the long term say till upper secondary. Are the students able to read easy Chinese books, newspapers, magazines etc ? Sorry for so many questions.

Thank you for your help!

When I check the GSIS wed site, I only could found activities from Y3 onward. Do they offer Chinese lesson for after school activies for Y1 student? Usually how many activies will the kid join the school activities after school?If they stay at school for the activities which means she will have lunch at school, do I need to prephare pack lunch or can she go to the school canteen with the other kids?

My daughter is accepted for Year 1 for coming year.  As
you mentioned before, the program is similar to other IS.  Is that mean they don't have many homework to do?
1. How is the discipline for this school?
2. Did your kid complain anything about the school?
3.  Overall, do you feel you make a right choice to
   change school for your son.

Hi! christf,

About the daily reading book and two library books for Grade 1 ,will teachers discuss the books during lessons? How do they follow up? Or students just have to read them at home?
And, the daily reading book is chosen by teachers,or by students themselves?

Any writing assignments is required?

The teacher and/or helping moms will conduct guided reading at school for the daily reading book but will only cover a few pages and not the whole book. Then, the parents are requested to conduct the guided reading for their kids at home using the daily reading book.

Could you explain more on "guided reading"? Is that different books have different "guilded reading"? How long does it take for parents to conduct it at home per day?

Hi christf,

Thank you very much for your sharing. I would like to apply K1 for my girl in this coming year, would it be too late for me to do so? Besides, her first language is still Cantonese, would the school put this into consideration when conducting the interview? And is it really hard to get in? What are the school's expectation in accepting students?

Dear christy, thanks for your details information. By the way, is GSIS doing IB or GCSE exam for secondary students? If doing GCSE, what subject they can choose? GCSE have any plan go for IB in coming years? For secondary students, normally they will join school after school activities or others? Thanks?
