Dear All SPCPS parents,

My girl will promote to P1 this Sept. I heard the standard of Chinese and English is quite hard as they changed the syllabus. I think English is not a problem for my kids because School practice is quite enough. Can Anyone share about the Chinese Standard and What else that we can prepare for them!

I do not have any idea of the level of P1. I have checked with St Lei Lu before but didn't register as I would like to see if we can handle it or not.

My elder son has gone to the other totorial centre before for 2 months in 2 different centres. So you could imagine how GOOD are the centres la, just wasting time and money. My son complaint it's too noisy in the centre that he could not concentrate on his homework and I heard from the mother of his best friend, her son had the same comment as well. Therefore, I am planning to have a trial in the first term by ourselves and decide the next action.

Thnks for your comments. May I know which tutorial centre where you son have before. I understand the Local style tutorial was always like this. Sister Joanna Or Lucia doens't like the students go to tutorial because they might have a bad behavioural effect. Thanks for your information!!! Keep in Contact and share!!! She takes English lesson in a group once a week. Just want her to have some exposure to native speaker and practice more writing skill. She doesn't take any phonics class. The school does teach phonics in Oral Class though the progress is quite slow.

She also takes Potunghua tutorial because they only PTH once a cycle.

For GS, they have one quiz (40marks) and two assessments (5 marks each) for each term. Full score is 50.

The total score for exam subjects are 95, the remaining 5 marks are based on day-to-day work and performance.

Composition is a combination of daily assessment and exam.

Handwriting, Visual Arts and RE are daily assessed.

Oral, Listening, Music, PE and PTH have some sort of assessments.

My girl didn't take any preparatory class before going to P.1.  If you girl belongs to those who can concentrate and "sit still" and listen, you don't have to worry much.  If she is very active and always "out of control" style, you may have to train her a bit earlier so that she can adapt P.1 easier.  (life in primary is not as free as kinder, you have many rules to follow)

As I have mentioned earlier that I think interest in reading is very important, you can start building  up reading habit for her (both Chinese and English).  English standard is crucial.  If you want her to take a course, you can consider brushing up her English. It helps in understanding  both GS and Maths. When they reach P.3 or P.4, it is the language skill that matters most.

If you don't want her to take any course, just simply ask her to revise what she has learnt in kindergarten so that she would not be just like a blank paper......  The observe her problems she encountered and get related courses.

Oh! But my suggestions are for those who do not aim high.  I know some parents who already start teaching the kids P.1 syllabus during summer so that the kids can be ahead of the others. So it depends on your need.

Thanks your information, very informative and helpful. I appreciated that you have clearly mentioned that your information is for those parents who are not request very high. Therefore, we have more idea on how to do and what we can get.

I have one question, as we are not living too close to the school but the school is using cycle system. Is there any headaches for arranging the extra activities(outside) after school? Because every Monday maybe day 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6......., that means every monday they finish school in different time if they have activity from school, so the time is not easy to control.

Hi AndyRain,

You don't have to worry.

The school hours are the same everyday. They have School Activities class within school hours.

If you choose to join other school activities (which are not many for P.1, most will join Computer class but you still need to go through a lucky draw screening), it will be held regularly on a particular weekdays or Saturdays.

I remember that School Activities class for P.1 is just some handcrafts unless you are chosen to join the choir.

Just a reminder, on the first day of school, you are going to get many circulars to read and reply, so you better make sure you have enough time and energy to finish them all.

According to what I heard, the teacher will speak in English although they know the girls are not too familiar with English or some/most/all of them are not fully understand. The teacher hope the girls won't rely on any luck to change the channel. Let them get use with the new medium environment. Mostly the girls can handle it in the 2nd term, every year is like this.

The girls go to their classroom.
Then, the girls will come to the hall to meet the parents.

Can you provide the most important things or problems that we may have or prepare for the P1 School Life. I just met a P4 parents yesterday. I found this school is really my ideal one. Kids are not stressful but strict enough. They are very happy in SPC. However Internal competition is very demanding. Kids are more creative and they can explore many things not only reading from textbooks. Reading program is very good. Each kids has their own character. He told me that Her girl looks really like "Paul Con" Girl now!! Very Confidence and Independent!! God Bless!!

Yes, each girl has different character--------
Mine is a trouble one.

The homework load is really less, many student can finish it in 10-15 minutes. But, my princess could finish it in 2 hours or more, I had to scold her, than she improved to half hour, but, after a few days, she repeated her slow motion again, so I had to scold/punish her again. She don't like dictation, just want to play at school with classmates. Lots of talking in school.

So, it really different in different kids. Most kids are not like mine. Mine is a trouble one and I really don't know how to boost up her spirit in academic. Poor me!

The testbook are easy, if your kid can cooperate in preparing dictation and finishing homework.
The important thing is: read lots of both English and Chinese story books.

Oh, I feel sorry to hear the working speed is that slow of your daughter. I understand your feeling!!! My elder son is opposite to your daughter, he does his homework very fast BUT he makes many careless mistakes because of this as well. So every kids has their own problem. I have headache on how to improve his careless as well. Are you feel more comfort after hering what I said!! haha

For books! It really depends on your daughter's classmates. My daughter only read those books which her classmates like to read, and those recommended by their reading teacher. So, I don't know what is the trend when your daughter enter P1.

For my daughter, she read: 老鼠記者, 米奇偵探, 冒險小虎隊; Rainbow Magic series, Princess Tiara series (she likes only faries).

Yes, I also wonder how come their text books are that less?? Much lesser than my son's school. Is anyone know are there any more exercise book we have to buy from the school later or the school will provide worksheets? As SPN no needs to buy books as well, because the school provides all the materials.

For P.1 & P.2, no need to buy music book.
They have to buy music textbook starting in P.3.

No computer class, only have computer class as interest class after school hours (optional-要抽籤).

"Creative writing" and copies fee for additional "worksheets" have to be paid. It cost not much! A hundred something.

For hair accessories -- all color can be used, but not that very shiny(no 閃粉), too complicated/big(不跨張,大舊).

I am not sure --- as far as I observe, the teacher will select the student, the teacher will ask the student during class, not send in memo.

Dear jazzmama

Kids are free to join Music Festival. Teachers will ask the students during class. Whoever likes to join can get a form and return to the teacher. But you have to sort out everything with your piano teacher. They just give you the form and do the registration for you. You have to alert your girl when it is closer to the period of registration.

For Speech Festival, teachers will normally ask those who are interested to join to have sort of a screening test. For the selected students, the teachers will train them. But I know that some parents are very keen to join and even if the teacher doesn't choose the girl, they will ask the teacher to help in doing registration and they themselves will doing the training work. Again, you have to alert your girl.

The school set the minimum requirement at 60 marks for Chinese. This is also for Eng and Maths.
The Chinese textbook is common as other primary, but mainly study exercise provided from school. Suggest you to buy some exercises and mock exam exercises for support.

The lang during recess for P1 students are mainly in Chinese.

FYI: Have you all got the uniforms already? I got them from 2 shops and both my husband and I found that the quality from the shop next to their school is better than Joseph. I think the colour of the uniform from Joseph is too dark and the cloth is not soft enough so not too comfortable. I got 4 sets from Joseph and I brought two sets to exchange for winter uniform as I prefer the one I bought from the next shop more. Besides, the P.E. pants I exchanged today from Joseph is better, the cloth is not linen, so more comfortable than the one I bought from school (Joseph) on the registration day.

Please try to check with Jing Kung again but I have made the reservation for the full set on 10 Jul. You may need to queue for the Magical english after the reservation completed. Remember to buy the book cover which is not expensive and good.

I brought the Uniform already and I got it from the neighbour stores from School. I just brought 2 sets only and 1 set of PE uniform.

1) VA- normally its pastel and colour pencils, desk mat, wet tissue and apron.  The teacher will tell you what to bring in the first lesson. You may need to prepare scissors and glue.  The requirements may differ from class to class. There may also be additional material required in different VA lessons. So make sure you remind your daughter to write clearly and listen carefully.

2.Reading report- need to bring during reading class. They have different English sheet for English and Chinese sheet for Chinese class.  The teacher will brief the kids during lessons.  Books that kids read both at home and school can be added to the sheet.  You can get additional sheet from teacher or photocopy for use.  Again, ask you kid to pay attention to when she needs to bring the sheet for teacher's checking.  Different teacher may have different practice.  Most of them will ask the student to prepare a Reading folder (like a big plastic envelope or zip bag) to put all reading book and sheets inside.  Separate bags for Chinese and English Reading Class.

3. Award - yes, I think it starts from Sep because before that, you are not her student!  And keep an eye on the competitions in school.  They have many interclass competitions. Such as singing, dancing, writing,  sports day and math speed test etc.  Even if the whole class participates in the competition, you can still get the score.

After a certain time, the Reading Class teacher will ask the kid to bring it back to school for her to check. So it is nothing very rigid. No need to worry.

Regarding the school bag, we use Lego. For my elder daughters, she is studying in P.3, we use "Seven", it really light but expensive, ~$900.

My Girl has taken Swimming course in Hoi Tin (SPC) since 4 Years.

Anyone knows regarding the exercise/workbook for the PTH lesson? My daughter said her teacher mentioned on the 1st lesson but no workbook/exercise on the book list, I even checked with Jing Kung, same answer as well. However, on the 2nd lesson, there's a new teacher???? She didn't mention about the exercise/workbook anymore, so strange!!!

I choose the computer class only, just waiting for the reply.

If I remember correctly (or if they have not changed), there is only one design for both English and Chinese reading, but you have to use one separate sheet for Eng and one for Chin. This is because your girl has to hand them in to different teachers.

Also, I was told by other parents and my daughter that all reading sheets and reading reports done in primary has to be kept until P.6. for applying secondary school.
