My son will interview KBCK on 2008-01-28 AM.  Any mother can share the experiense regarding the interview and when will know the result?
作者: NatMom    時間: 08-1-24 20:05

We attended the interview last year.  The principal gave us some basic info of the school.  Then a teacher asked us why we choose KBCK and  which stream we were going to put the child for the primary stage.  She reminded us that after going to this school for 2 years, it's difficult to go back to local stream.

They didn't ask much question on the kid, but the teacher would play with him/her and asked her to do something.  The purpose is to know whether he/she can understand English.

For this year, I'm not sure.  Hope this could help.

Thanks Natmon.  How long will get the result if my child is admissible by the school?

My son has the interview this morning. It is similar to last year as described by NatMom. Ms Wood offered verbal acceptance for my son but the official acceptance letter will be sent out by ned of February after all the kids has been interviewed. Good Luck !!!

My son also attended the interview last week and got verbal acceptance right after the interview.  I'm still considering whether to put him in KBCK or not.  'Coz I heard that most of the graduates of KBCK this year couldn't secure a place in ESF primary schools.  But I want my boy to study in ESF primary school.
作者: Sandrine    時間: 08-1-29 13:20

Really surprised to read what you heard.  Who did you hear it from?  Contrary to what you said, my daughter's classmates got accepted by ESF last year without any problem, except the very few who chose RCHK, ICS or continued with K3 for local primary.

I'm not sure about this year's situation but last year, the kids in my daughter's class were accepted ok.  I wouldn't say everyone was accepted but there were only 6 or 7 kids in the class that I haven't spoken to (so I don't know which school they eventually go to).  The rest were accepted if they had chosen ESF.

Hi Sandrine,

I'm also considering to apply ESF for my daughter next year.  I was told that the competition to get into Shatin Junior is so severe.  Is that true?  How about Becon Hill?

By the way, can you give some comments on these 2 schools?  Just don't know how to choose! (Currently we are living near to Becon Hill, but if Shation Junior is better, we would move to that area)

Thank you so much in advance!

Natmom

NatMom,
Thanks so much for your reply. May I know that how's your comments on KBCK. Regarding to the school web site, some pictures were taken in a outdoor playground. Is KBCK has their own or that's just a public one? How's your daughter's school life?
Thanks once again,

Joshbelle,

KBCK only maintains informal contact with ESF schools and its children doesn’t have priority over those of other schools.
However, KBCK kids would still get interviewed early and ESF schools would send their staff to the KBCK classrooms to observe the kids who have applied for ESF schools before the formal interview.
Many KBCK kids already have siblings going to ESF schools.
Many others are non-Chinese and so their priorities are higher.
But I also know children without any priority got accepted.
This is what happened last year.

Choosing a school really depends on your expectations and your planning for primary.
To us, KBCK is a great school.
It allows children to learn through play, with lots of singing, dancing and arts & craft.
No homework, no writing at all but there’s show and tell every day for children to bring to school something that relates to the theme that they’re learning. There’s time for free play every day for the kids to learn to play with one another (Different toys are placed on the tables every day).
There’re dress up corner, kitchen corner, library corner, sandbox, etc.
There’s also one library & PE class a week (PE is done on the public playground beside the school).
Children are introduced to the alphabets & basic phonics in K2.
There’re 2 concerts a year for the children to perform on stage in the chapel.
Teachers are loving and caring, although many of them were new to the school (some turnover earlier).
Children learn bible stories and the love of God.
Parents are welcome to the classroom and so you too can get involved in your kid’s learning.
Other than school fees, there’re no other fees at all. Even the school bag and the concert VCDs and photos were free. I believe the school has received a lot of support from the Kowloon International Baptist Church.

I must say that I’m happy with KBCK.
I’ve also heard good comments about Anfield where kids can learn Putonghua as well (KBCK only uses English) but it’s a lot more pricey.
But of course, if your target school is ESF school, ESF kindergarten should be a safer choice.
So it all depends.

Natmom,

I’m sorry that I can’t offer you comments on the comparison between SJS and BHS.
While I know parents with kids studying there, I don’t have enough info to give a fair comparison.
You might want to visit the websites of these schools to get a feel first.

Dear Sandrine,

Thanks a bunch for your detailled advice.  Yeah, I also like KBCK very much for its "teaching through play" and its Christain values.  My major reservation is it doesn't have Chinese teaching and the teachers' turnover rate.  I may be too greedy, I want my children to be fluent in English (so I plan to put them in ESF schools) but I also want them to know Chinese.  I'm sure that my boy will love KBCK as he's now studying in the pre-programme in Anfield (but Anfield is too expensive), he's more adapted to international schooling.  So I'm thinking whether we can find some structured Chinese/Mandarin course for him if we finally decide to let him study in KBCK.

On the other hand, as THINK has Chinese teaching and we have friends recommending this school, we are also considering this school.

Choosing a suitable school for our children is a very difficult task!

StayWithMe,

You're welcome.

To be frank, during the first 2 months, my daughter felt quite uncomfortable with the school life.  Whenever I asked her "what did you do at school today?" She would answer "nothing, just walk around". Just like what Sandrine descriped, KBCK has free play time, and my daughter didn't know how to "PLAY" freely -- cause it's very different from her previous nursery school (they schedule everything). And sometimes she would say some kids were naughty and hit her.

Luckily, my girl started getting used to it when she establish friendship with her classmates. In fact, most of the kids are well behaved and the teachers are quite concern with the class discipline. Now she would say "today I play XXX with XXX". And no more hitting occur after I taught her to protect herself.

I think KBCK is a great school, they let kid to learn bit by bit everthing day. They definitely won't have a tight schedule, but they have a theme on different months. After that theme has completed, the kid will bring their "masterpiece" home, some of them are quite amazing. The other acheivement of my daughter so far is the standard of English - since I seldom speak English to her right now, she can still keep her standard pretty good, and getting better and better. She could use correct grammer and phrase to express herself. I am really impressed.

All in all, I love this school very much.

it's so very happy to find this topic
bcuz KBCK is rarely discussed in this forum

my child will attend the interview later,
i'll choose pm class, sincerely hope that my child can be accepted.

may i ask those parents whose children have already attended the interview/verbally accepted by KBCK, does the school require the child to be able to speak fluent in English? or it's sufficient if they show ability to understand in English?

i've heard before that AM class is already very full, just wondering if there's still place in PM.

many thx for sharing.

Hi parents,

my daughter will be interviewed by KBCK by end of this week, and she is luckily to be accepted by ESF too. I've heard a no. of good comment on KBCK, but my priority will still be ESF coz my daughter is an elder one, and I want a secured place in ESF for the younger one in the future. Otherwise, I'll choose KBCK for sure.

KBCK doesn't teach English. It only provides an environment for the kids to learn, in English.  If you're talking about spoken English, most kids speak fluent English after spending 2 years there. They don't learn writing at all.  But they do quite a bit of reading.  They have library sessions to borrow books and cassette tapes to read and to listen at home.  Also lots of time for stories, show & tell, art & craft, singing and dancing.  That's how the kids learn.  You'll be amazed at the knowledge that the kids can pick up thru these activities.  e.g. when they learn about dinosaurs, the kids can tell you the names of different dinosaurs, what they eat and how they're different, etc.  But they may not be able to write and spell like most other kids in local schools do.
