Hi, phonics is for young kids but IPA is for some upper form students, like F.3/4. Well, learning IPA and phonics at a very early stage may create confusion to students...

My kid is 7 and is learning IPA right now. He can catch up the IPA course quite well. According to his IPA teacher, Phonics should be for kinder students.

Of course IPA is internationally more acceptable and hence more accurate in terms of pronunciation, but for most of the time you will have to refer constantly to the dictionary for reference (you can imagine how useful it is in situation when dictionary is not always available). There are also situations where pronunciation based on phonics does not match with IPA and hence IPA serves to correct the mispronunciation.
Catching up with the course quite well =/= useful of course. It all depends on whether you are a native speaker or not. Studying phonics provides kids of non-native speaker an easy way to remember and master the logic and rules of pronunciation. Once the basic is done, then studying IPA pdovides students with additional dictionary skills that help him/her to deal with difficult words. In conventional school system, band 1 secondary school will start teaching IPA in form 1, while for some others, students are required to learn IPA at their primary study.

i think it depends on what your child likes and how old he or she is. I just worry that IPA seems to harsh on students, it is like putting puzzles together, i don't see any englishman learning IPA, maybe try something less heavy and more easy to absorb would be best.
