hi flyingguest!
would you mind telling me which 傳統幼兒園 your daughter studied before? is english her first language? I wanna send my boy to 筆架山學校 too, but I'm afraid the competition is too keen.
Many thanks for sharing.

Primary school children are actually learning to learn. Children are in fact learning to read, write, and spell gradually through daily lessons. Most teachers do not believe in homework but the children are doing a lot of things at school. There are no tests (especially in lower classes) that particularly require home revisions but the children are assessed continually throughout the school year.
Depending on different practices at different schools and with different teachers, most teachers would provide regular information letters to parents, telling them what the children have been (will be) doing, learning, etc. Some teachers would do that once per term, some might write to parents every month. If your teacher has not been doing that, ask her/him for more information.
Let me put it this way, you may consider that "no news is good news". If you child has problem at school, eg not paying attention in class, bullying others (or being bullied), not catching up with school work at the appropriate level, etc, then I am sure you would have been informed already.
If you are really concerned, arrange for a meeting with the teacher to discuss further.

Hi Hellobaby1121,
I also submitted application for Year 1 through central application this year, however, up to todate, I not yet received the letter from the school, may I know when you received the regret letter ?
which kindergarten your kid is studying, as far as I know, if your kid is not studying in ESF Kinder, the chance for offering the interview is comparatively low.

I also submitted application for 2008/09 year 1 this Sep. I've not yet received any interview notification or regret letter until today. ESF centre said school will give interview notification at the end of Nov or at the beginning of Dec. Good luck.

Dear Hellobaby1121
Is Kowloon Junior your target school? Don't be too upset.
As far as I know, there will be children who give up their offers from time to time or some applicants fail in the interview....I suggest you write a letter to the school expressing your keen interest.

Don't worry much about it. My kids are in P2 and P5. My P2 kid enjoys reading a lot no matter whether there is any picture or not. She will pick her own book and read. No need to force her.
For P5 one, I am surprise how he can read so fast and with good understanding of the book.
I think this is the skill that ESF would like the kids to learn so that they can be more independent to go for 2ndary school.
So far, I enjoy it.
But one thing.. I think the Math skill is a bid behind when you compare it to the local school students
For ESF, Primary school are for self learning.

I do not see why we should compare our children with local school students. Local school math cannot really train up students to have a mathematical mind. Rather children are expected to be math machines that can do simple mathematical calculations quick.
I am not saying doing math calculations quick is of no use. In fact, I agree that children should eventually learn to do simple calculation quick. Just that, they should only be asked to do such drilling/training AFTER they have thoroughly understood the concept behind the calculation and the process. And I think, international schools are doing a better job in this.
I would not say that our children are "behind". Rather it is the local education system that is trying to push children to their limit.
