Hi everybody,
My little son, who will be 7 by the end of this year, is a book addict. He spends most of his free time in reading various types of books.
His recent interest is the series of Harry Po ...
hi , don't worry, I also read all the Harry Potter serious.
I think the most important thing is that whether your son can differentiate - content was really a story/novel and it can/must not apply to real life!!!!
I have your worry too for some other child story books for my daughter of 4
let say, for example, Jack and the beanstalk, a story about a magic bean tree to the sky and the giant. The child, Jack cut the magic bean tree by axe so that the giant fell down from sky and killed.
you know in read society we punish people by sending them to court and prision. We cannot kill people by whatever means and reason.
But my daughter, though only 4, also able to understand that is story and not mix up with the real life.
let him go!

Hi C9C9
I am afraid he will think too much when he sees there are so many good characters in the book are killed.
so characters killed in HP 7 were second line characters. The books did not describe the killing in details actually!
Reading is different from watching TV!
HP are good novels, don't worry!

Hi wisekid2007,
As a Christian, I strongly advise children not to read the Harry Potter. I am pretty sure that a bright kid (or even an average kid) at the age of 7 is capable of distinguishing the real life from novels. However, you never know what kind of value those stories instil in a kid when he/she keeps on reading them. Not to mention that you yourself have worries over the content.
I didn't stop my son from watching or reading the Harry Potter because, thanks to the Lord, that he himself found it uninteresting the first time he watched the movie.
You may consider introducing some other books to your child to divert his attention from Harry Potter. I would recommend the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis and some non-fiction like Horrible Science, Horrible History and Horrible Geography.

Hi C9C9,
I'm sorry that I could not agree with you. Allow me to say that the life of a person is precious, be that person a good guy or bad guy, "main character" or "second line character". I don't think anyone on earth has the right to determine who deserves to die.

Hi wisekid2007,
Parents should definitely guide, not dictate, their children in choosing books.
In that case, you may consider "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and other interesting stories by Roald Dahl. "My Father Got an Aligator" and other funny stories by Jeremy Strong.
The Horrible ~ series are really informative and interesting. You can read with him at the beginning. When he finds that they are not horrible at all, he will enjoy reading them.
It's really good that your son loves reading.

Hi wisekid2007,
You are welcome. My pleasure to share with you.
If you'd like your son to read more Chinese, you may read with him at the beginning. Start with something light and fun. Even "Doraemon" comics will do.

Hi wisekid2007,
I think you have to let your son know that the coming series are not suitable for child as many characters would die.
After read Harry Potter for one and a half series, my son (when he was 7 years old) he felt scare and has nightmare. He was afraid of darkness and needed me to talk to him till he sleep every night. Finally, he discontinued to read Harry Potter.
And from that time onwards, he has never read Harry Potter again even though somebody sent him as a gift.
But still he likes to read very much. He is also a book worm but for Chinese only.
Anyway, different children have different response. But small child may not accept and get to know about death. You have to do a lot of counciling job.

Hi! Everybody
It seems all of your kids are very smart and able to read in English. Can you help me with the below problem?
My Kid's (9yrs old) Eng is not very good, her vocabulary is week (may be because my Eng is not very well as well), her vocabulary is very weak. However, she is not refuse to read in Eng (May be because my Domestic Helper read Eng with her in the past). I already very hard to read Eng books with her, i use dictionary to find all the meaning of the words before I read with her everyday. My kid are not refuse to read in Eng, but her Eng is still bad.
May I ask if it is not possible to have a good Eng Kid if the parent's Eng is weak. How can this improve?
Thanks helping!

Hi, Christf!
My kid can read some chapter books in her leisure time, she can understand the general content of the books, she can read all the words by the spelling, but she don't know the meanings of the words.
But I found that she always don't know the meaning of the words. I think she has at least 4 to 5 unknown words in one page.
I have read the books of Schoolastic in book shops, but I thinks the words is even harder than Narnia series and Roald Dahl series. Do you think so.

Hi, Christf!
Thank you very much for your kind reply.
Actually, I saw herclassmate and friends can read the chapter books in P1, and the Roald Dahl and Narnia series in P2, and the Harry Potter series in P3.
And the point is, I think they don’t have much unknown words in the stories, otherwise how can they read the Roald Dahl, Narnia and Harry Potter series.
My kid is now reading the Rainbow Magic, you know each page have picture.
Before she read the Junie B Jones…...
Actually she don’t have much time to read even she always willing to because she have much homework or otherwork to do.
She usually read books when she go to toilet, on cars……. Anything she think is funny she will read, no matter Chinese or ENG, picture or non-picture. Before sleep I will have around 30 mins to read the Roald Dahl series with her.
I will explain the meaning of the words to her.
But for years, she seems no improvement in her vocabulary, may be she just listen to the Chinese meaning I said to her.
On average, my kid have about 10 unknown words in 1 page of Narnia series and Roald Dahl series.
Sometimes, she will read my herself if I am not home. She can read one to two chapters of the Roald Dahl series one night, she can know the general content, but she also like me to read her again because she can know more and the exact meaning of the stories.
When I ask her, she say she will prefer me to read story with her than Domestic Helper because I will explain the words meaning to her.
I have read The Princess School series in bookshops and found that there is really much more hardwords for my kid, I think 15 or above on average.

Hi, Everybody,
I just read The Secrets Droon series of Scholastic today, I think my kid have 5 unknown words in 1 page.
Can I ask about how many unknow words your kids will found in 1 page of Roald Dahl / Narnia / Harry Potter series.
How can I know which books is the suitable standard of my kid.
May I ask do you think I should read with her or let her to read herself, because if she read by herself, I found the meaning she guess may be wrong.
By your experience, what method should I use, what kinds of books (e.g.what standard) should I give her, about how long can her vocabulary capacity be improved.

For those carefully graded English books (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as those English fiction series for kids such as Rainbow Magin, Magic Tree House,..etc. The objective of these books is to help young readers building up reaEnglish literacy through reading. Then when reading such kinds of books, the kid should try to understand the meaning and pronounication of every single, phrases, expression or sentenace, etc.
Hi, Christf,

While this is the gifted education forum, we are talking about reading remedial measures.
Anyway, just add a few point of two cents worth.
Nanria series is much better in the language used than Harry Potter.
Oxford has publish a "reading tree". Those are less demanding if your kids are a bit behind in reading.
Reading story books in English should go hand-in-hand with an English speaking environment. If the parents speak fluent English, have some English speaking days with the kids. Otherwise, use some English speaking cartoons. For example, my dauther found Disney Play House interesting and started reading those books of the characters there, e.g. Bob the builder, Stanley and the Great Book of Everything, Bear in the Big Blue House, Bucket of Dinosaurs ... Now in K3, she reads by her own (words, not comics).
Many of us (the parents generation) come from families with parents of limited English competencies. Still, quite a number of us have aquire adequate level of English to be communicative. So parents level of English should not be the limiting factor. Providing explosure to the language for your kids is the key to success.
