Hi, 小女是今年小一新生, 在適應上大致都冇問題, 但她說
D 老師好嚴 (可能好同以往幼稚園比較).

  今日英文科派左
   2 POEMS, 是否每天也要帶回學校 ? 另外, 下星期便要
   上游水堂, 很擔心佢換衫會有問題呀..

1) What are the names of the 2 English poems?
Will that be the "speech materials" for the upcoming 59th Hong Kong School Speech Festival?

2) My child was in P.1 last year.
What I heard is that the pupils can manage to get changed by themselves.
Don't worry too much.
Actually, this is a good chance for them to learn and manage by themselves.

3) It is naturally that you tend to compare the present situation with that in K3.
Whether the teachers are strict or not is yet to be seen as it is only one week since the start of the school term.

We have recived two Eng poems speech materials, which one girls solo and one for the boys. The girls one is "I had a little Cat" and boys one is" Dragon".
My girl love her school life so far, maybe still not much homework,hahaha...she only spend less then 2 min to get it done two page math.she has to takes one hour to school by schoo bus,but she seems get on very well with the other older kids, she told me a lot of jokes which are telling from them, we see later how she act lai...

Kids can get on well with each other very quickly.
But I have to alert you that your daughter will hear lots of gossip from other kids in the school bus.

1) Chinese dance

- If your daughter would like to join the school team or
other ECAs after school, you better have a look at the timetable
of the extra school buses
that will be provided first and then plan for the pick-up.
Go to the school web site and click "School Information"
and then click "Extra School Buses".

I believe the school will distribute other circulars
introducing what other free ECAs and paid ECAs
will be available for P.1 soon.

Then, you have to decide what you want to join.

Audition will be held for school team so if there will be
more pupils who would like to join a particular one, the school has to pick up the more qualified ones to
represent the school.
But you can submit the form to the school first.

2) Speech Festival.

- Theoretically, the school will not provide training to
the pupils. However, the English teachers will pick up
a few in October and give some brief tips to them before the competition.

In case you would like your daughter to receive more
comprehesive training before hand, you may have to look
for private centres or tutors outside.

My child told me that  the pupils did not use even shampoo but just clean water.
The time is bit rush during the lesson so you have to do a
thorough cleaning  for your daughter when she returns
home that evening.

I have also signed up for solo-verse for my kid. Originally, I sent in the fees for both solo-verse and prose-reading, but the teacher said they would only enter students for the solos. A bit disappointing to miss the opportunity.:cry:

It is normal for the school to submit the application for the solo-verse for most of the pupils.

If you are keen to let your daughter to try the prose-reading, you may look for some private centres in town who are the members of the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival and they can submit the entry form for you.

1. Does TSL teach one year or half year higher - i.e. P.1 use P.2 or P1 2nd term textbooks in English and Maths?

2. Heard that the 1st interview for P.1 is a group interview, is it just playing games, or discussion by kids, or a presentation by the kids? How long will it take?

My child told me that the kids are learning/playing with the floating
board in the first swimming lesson.

The water of the school's swimming pool is rather shallow so it should not be dangerous.

For those who can swim a bit, they will teach the others who cannot swim and help/play with each other.

Don't worry too much and ask your kid to relax!!!

1) As far as I know, the school will not do that.
P.1 pupils study P.1 textbooks and P.2 pupils study P.2 textbooks ......................... and so on.
I think the school would like to provide a decent childhood for the
kids who are studying there.

2) As answered by littletiger, the format of the interview seems to
change somewhat every year so we are not sure how it would be for
this year.

2007-08 PLK TSL P1 Adjustment - Teachers' experience and effort

Dear P 1 mums,

Few observations if other mums will help to share their experiences:

1. My child did not know the names of his classmates and even some teachers' names after a week's class. In the kinder garden, the teachers put some effort to introduce themeselves to the kids and arrange some class orientations for the kinds to know each other. I have a bit worry that the children in the class felt alone and anxious without knowing each others.

2. My child was very fear of one of the PE teachers, vomit a bit when mention the name of the teacher, and have strong response to refuse to participate in the selection of school sports team where the teacher was responsible for the selection. I did not know what's happening, will other kids have same kind of response?

3. He enjoys the class where he knows the teacher's names and has initiated the idea that he would like to participate in the solo in the speech festival. He enjoyed to read the poem.

4. He enjoys doing homework and lunch time hours.

5. How does the class teachers facilitate the P1 students to engage with each other in the class during recess or morning hours?

6. What are the kids doing during 2:30-3:30pm.? My child reflects that they only read stories books, why not the teachers can make use of the time to conduct orientations to engage with the children at the begining of the semester. I think sense of belonging and engaging with each other is the most important issue at the begining stage of P1 adjustments.

Can you share more on these issues with your child's experience, P1 mum?

My girl said "NCS" stands for Non-Chinese Students.
"NCS" seems to be a new term used by the school this year.
We did not have this term last year.

When the Chinese students are having the Chinese lesson, the Non-Chinese students will have the French lesson.

The homework for Chinese and Non-Chinese students may vary slightly.

Hope my information is correct.

I saw some rice left on several pupils' faces and a few of them have already lost their front teeth.
Guess they must be very hungry during the lunch time.

To be very honest, I am not too sure.
The reason is that they are so many different instrumental classes and so many instructors involved.

I would suggest that if you already have certain classes/instructors outside which you are satisfied, please continue with the existing ones.

Unless you are not satisfied with your current ones outside or if there are some new instrumental classes you want to take, you may try the ones provided by the school.

I know that many new teachers join the school for this
school term, are they mostly from Local U only?
Found the English teacher's English standard is not so
good as expected for teaching in an English Primay
School.

The school only encourages the pupils to learn musical instrument, but it is not compulsory.

I think many primary schools in HK will also encourage their pupils to do so, not only TSL.

Yes, I know there are a few new teachers joining the school in this academic year.
But I do not even know their names at this moment, let alone their educational background.
So far I have met a few English teachers at school.
Some  are graduated from overseas universities and some are from
local universities.
But I do not see necessarily a direct correlation between good English standard to whether the teachers are graduated from overseas universities or not?
Some of the teachers graduated from overseas are quite fluent in English.
But I have also seen several teachers who are graduated from local
univeristies but they can
also speak quite good English.

Will it be too early to make  this judgement?
To be honest, you cannot expect the level of all English teachers to be
on a par with native speakers.

The multi-cultural environment and the exposure at school will be
another favourable factor for our children  to speak/use more English.

My son observed the concern on musical instructment by the music instructors and very interested in choosing Trumpet. I would like he to choose Violin as he has been in the training for few months. Yet he insisted to learn a new one in addition to violin.

Any senior class parents whose children had choosen Trumpet training in TSL, here is my question:

1) P 1 student able to handle the Trumpet? I heard from others who said that usually Trumpet training will start from P3 or P4?

2) How about the quality of instructors in the school?

3) Are the fees reasonable?

4) Trumpet is one of the instructment in school orchestra?

My son's class teacher can speak fluent English and I knew that her training is not majoring in English. I believe that the quality of teacher is not only about his/her English proficiency in primary school. The most important quality will be his/her competency to motivate the students to show interest in their learning and understand the needs of the students from their developmental needs.

The overall impression about the teachers' English proficiency is that almost all of them especially English and class teachers are able and willing to speak fluent English.

Dear P1 mum,

I have some feelings to share about today's class demonstration:

1) I did not expect this was a show in the hall. I expected the real class teaching in a normal school schedule, even if the class teachers and students are not "perfectly" performed because then it will be genuine and real. I was a bit disappointed towards school administration on organizing this kind of "show". I have a great doubt on the "rationale" behind this "show".  What kind of philosophy are conveying behind this "show"?

2) All the games seemed to be "fun".. However, how about those students who sat on the floor and waiting for the teachers being "chosen" because they are  labelling as "good" or "smart"? What is the educational philosophy being conveyed in the games? We are not expecting "perfect" performance of our kids, we need to respect our kids's pace.

3) The real interaction/communication between school and parents are not through "show"s, but through genuine communication where the school is repsected not because of the "show", but because of your firm upholding of your education mission and philosophy, where we respected our children and parents.  My child told me that they were told to behave "good" in the hall. I was really angry about this!! Why our children were put on the "table" and doing this performance. I was not informed of this "show" beforehand!! They should be in the class and attended the normal school schedule.

4) I was really disappointed about the school, where is your philosophy? who you are put in the top priority? publicity? our children's best interest?

5) When I look at the school website, they posted the parents' day picture, most of the pictures are about the new principal, where is the parents? where is the interaction between parents and school teachers? what is the focus of the event? what is the meaning behind the event?

Sorry, I am really angry and disappointed!! Can the school put more focus on educating our children to be a honest, down to the earth person instead of put much effort in publicity and pleasing the public and pleasing the parents with "beautiful" and "perfect" performance and "pictures". Can you put more time on every child, to advocate the value of respect, not only focusing on those who are labelled as "good" and "smart".
