You are right.

Kowloon Junior School - Homantin / Yau Yat Chuen
Zone: Areas south-west of Cherry Street and Ferry Street, the east side of Nathan Road to Boundary Street, including Yau Yat Chuen, then eastwards to the Choi Hung interchange. Areas south of Clearwater Bay Road, including Diamond Hill, Hammer Hill, Kowloon Bay, Telford Gardens, Lam Tin (excluding Sceneway Gardens which is Clearwater Bay School), Yau Tong, Ma Wan,
Tung Chung and Laguna City, but excluding Tseung Kwan O

Is your child apply Year 1? Your child is boy or girl? We lives in Kennedy Town and my boy will apply Kennedy School.

Yes, my son is applying year 1, he is 4 years old now, will apply in September. I will also apply RC , the new campus at Ma On Shan. i think more choices is better ~

We used to live in Shek Tong Tsui ga, near Kennedy Town

but we moved to Tung Chung since 2005.

Tung Chung to Ma On Shan is far away or not? How long is the travelling time?

RC sounds not bad because it has more chinese lessons but the school fee is more expensive because no subsidy from government. What is your perference? KJS or RC?

We also moved from Yuen Long to Kennedy Town in 2005.

Hi samanthavikki,

You can apply Shatin Junior School too and join Shatin College later. I heard that SC is very good among ESF and the academy result is great. But it is quite difficult to join as keen competition.

I read the past BK and someone said that ESF year 1 interview takes around 45 minutes and only interview the child. A group of children will interview together. They will stay in a classroom (similar in kindergarten) and teacher will observe they are playing, reading, etc. Later, teacher will tell story and make questions to children. Children should answer whole phase and avoid single word.

The school fee cost around $6500 - 7000 , coz they are private ESF......

Hi van2006,

ESF : English Schools Foundation, it included 10 primary schools, 5 secondary schools and 2 independent schools (primary+secondary).

KJS is one of primary and the full name is Kowloon Junior School in Homantin and Yau Yat Chuen.

RC is one independent school and the full name is Renaissance College in Ma On Shan.

I also want to apply RC but it is too far away from us. My 1st choice is Kennedy School and 2nd choice is Victoria Shanghai Academy. VSA is also bilingual (teach by english and mandarin native teacher) and my son has priority to join as he is studying in Victoria Kindergarten. The primary school fee is HK$6.500 per month in 2007/08 that is more expensive than ESF

Don't worry, competition in RC is not as keen as KJS. Good luck.

Miki,

VSA run IB PYP, MYP and DP.
- PYP : P1 to P6
- MYP : S1 to S4

- child either study overseas or local university (non-JUPUS)

Yes ar, i also applied JIS, but after discussed with my husband, we prefer our son to learn some Chinese, it will be
better for his future, coz JIS have limited Chinese lesson, RC/KJS should have more chinese.

Also, when we applied JIS, we have choosen Japanese
lesson instead of Chinese lesson, so none of chinese to be learn in JIS if we put our son there~

Heard that RC have more Chinese lesson and kids are
very happy in their school life, so RC is the 1st choice :)

No. Actually JIS taught Chinese (Putonghua) everyday and ESF only around 3 days.

Also, if you are local chinese, you MUST take Chinese as 2nd language, you are not allowed to choose Japanese. This is because the school says "mother language" is very important in a child's language development. He can not be a chinese who lives in HK without knowing Chinese. This is the School's point of view.

I am from Tung Chung too. My son is 4 years old and I am thinking aboutRC, DC and KJS. Anyone can share about DC (Discovery College)? I heardthis is a new one but not sure it is good or not.

DC is the existing ESF Bauhinia School. There are a lot of good comments, only that you don't know.

The waiting list for Y1 07/08 is already very long. They won't expand their primary classes and they are all full. Only the secondary school will be new.

DC is a new PIS under ESF but currently using Lai King Campus. DC's new campus (official campus) will open in 2008/2009 and all students will then study there at Discovery Bay, not Lai King campus.

DC is not even officially open. It will be a new school (ie a new legal entity) and will be taking over the students from Bauhinia. Even for Bauhinia, it is not true that there are "not many good comments". Where did you get the comments from? ESF parents? What exactly have they said about the school(s) being "not good"?

Honestly, I would have reservations in trusting comments from unknown source. If you have been actively surfing around, you would notice that many people start bad-mouthing ESF once their applications are rejected.

I am not a DC or Bauhinia parent, so I am not trying to defend for the school(s) blindly. I just think it would not be fair if these vague comments with no grounds are spread.

VSA的幼稚園較多NATIVE普通話老師, 但小學就一定唔多, 好多係水平測試二級乙的本地老師, 發音同中文水平都頗一般.

因為有NATIVE 英文老師日日對住, 所以整體英文水平會比本地學校高,呢個係針對用廣東話交談的家庭的學生來講, 而用開英文交談的家庭會發覺差了(普通話家庭亦係), 因缺乏環境, 學校唔係科科都用英文和普通話...

1. yes, you are required to send back the completed Year 1 application form to the central application department within the application period and not the individual school.

2. you cannot apply for school which is outside the catchment area you belongs to.

some of the programmes are in KJS, and others are in other ESF Primary. For kindergrten, should be in KJS and qingyi ESF.

我指的是小學, 不是幼稚園.

小學外籍老師當然全部係西人, 因為無得厄, 有樣看, 但普通話班主任就較少母語係普通話了, 好多係有學普通話的香港人教師, 而且好後生. 其實好難請"母語普通話人"來維小教, 其他學校反而較容易, 因為雙班主任制, 英文唔掂好難同"另一半"溝通, 所以學校暑假年年都送老師北上集訓操練普通話, 如果個個都已經係母語, 何必多此一举.

我唔係家長, 幼稚園同學仔好多直上維小, 係D媽咪友話我知, 有錯請更正.

Per information from the ESF website - notification by email after 4 Oct.

Interview - most likely in January/February for the first round

I don't think there is any official waiting list number but the admission officers of some schools may kindly inform you how your situation is.

We took the program before for my elder son. Not for the English proficiency but just to let him be familiar with the environment.

A reminder - such programme is offered by the ESF Services, not the primary schools themselves.

Yau_Cheung: Instead of the Eng. Program, I signed up my son for the ESF sports camp held over the Mid-October term break so as to help him get familiarized with the school we are applying for.
Furthermore, the 2 K2 classes from his kindergarten were also invited to our target ESF primary school for the Y2 Christmas Production. He told us he really likes the school after the outing.

We received the letter for an interview around November and the interview was held in late January. ESF primary schools staff visited the kindergarten and interviewed my son and other applicants during class time in mid-December.

The teachers teaching the extra english classes are not the same teachers teaching or interviewing the children. Plus, the programme are not designed with the purpose of attending interviews. I would say that if you think your child need extra classes to boost up his/her English, any English tutor can do that job.

Yesterday I received the below acknowledgement from ESF. Do you receive the same?

Subject: Acknowledgement of ESF Year 1 Application for Academic Year 2008/09

4 October 2007

Dear Parent,

Thank you for applying to ESF for a place in Year One in an ESF school in August 2008. We would like to advise you of the next steps in the application process.

Applications received at ESF Centre before the Year One deadline of 24 September 2007 will be drawn randomly by computer to determine the order in which they are processed.

Applications will then be sorted by category and priority within category. First offers for interviews will go to those in category one. Within each category those with a priority are processed first.

The priorities are:

those with siblings in an ESF school
those whose parents are former students of an ESF school
those attending ESF Kindergartens (for Y1)
The individual ESF schools according to zone will inform you by letter whether your child has been offered an interview in early December. Interviews will take place at the beginning of the New Year

Please also note that, dependent on applications received, there may be a need for school re-zoning to balance numbers across schools.

As we have limited spaces, those not offered an interview are placed on the wait list according to their category and the number they have drawn.

Yes, both my hushand and myself received the same acknowledgement.

Which school you're target for ? My 1st choice is Shatin Junior, however, knowing that the competition is very keen, I have a bit worried though my son's Englis is OK but sometimes kid's performance during the interview process is out of our control.

多謝妳的回覆, 請問妳有冇聽過話CWBS比較容易入, 其實我都有諗過victoria, 但九龍區只有KINDER, 中小學都要過海, 我本身住西貢, 而且老公唔想仔仔要過海番學噤辛苦.

Some parents said that it is easier to enter ESF primary in Hong Kong Island as 5 primary schools are located in Hong Kong Island and the other 5 are located in Kowloon and New Territories but the population....

You're right. But I recommend that you shall go to ESF web site in Jun/Jul 09 and make sure the application period will not be changed.

We lived in Kennedy Town so our target school is Kennedy School. My friend's son also graduated in SJS and SC. She said that they are excellent. What is your 2nd choice? RC?

各位媽咪:

小女打算入讀 ESF 幼稚園，但計劃讀傳統或直資小學。
請問怎樣解決在那裡插班讀 K3 ？因 ESF 只有 K1- K2。
有那間學校會接受這類學生入讀 K3 (除了國際學校) ？
有沒有媽咪有相同經驗？

Yes, my 2nd choice is RC. Last night Tsing Yi ESF Kinder held a parent meeting in their school. I met some parents whose kids are studying in RC, they all have good word of mouth of the school and showed appreciation on the progress and development of their kids while parents from SJS have some negative comments about teacher's morale and the kids' sense of belonging to the school.

How old is your friend's son, did they graduate from the school for some time or just recently ?
