Hi, moms,
New topic! Wish our kids have a wonderful and fruitful new school year. Not babies anymore, they are big K2 boys!

Lydia

Just back from holiday trip.

Went to Ocean Park last Friday.  Saw a group of kids joining the summer program of Ocean Park but did not see Preston.  It was really hot that day.

Dear All

Kota Kinabalu (KK in Sabah in Malaysia) is quite a good place for resort.  It's located just beside the sea & is not as hot as HK.  We had a leisure trip.  Did not plan for many activities but still enjoyable.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-8 09:30

ljsze,
Welcome back. Did Davin enjoy the trip?

I'm off this week and plan to take Preston somewhere but just noticed there is typhoon and the weather may change bad. So disappointed. May arrange some indoor activities.
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-8 10:37

Lydia

Davin enjoyed a lot but is a bit sick today.

Yes, the weather turns bad.  Nonetheless, it's too hot out there.  Outdoor activity is a bit tough.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-8 21:36

ljsze,
Hope Davin recover soon.

The weather is getting unstable, no idea where to go tomorrw under this bad weather. Preston always asks me what shall I do (also gives me a boring look!).

Davin wanted to go to school today.  Did Preston miss the school ?

At last, what do you do today ?
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-9 15:56

Dear all,

Just found the new message board  :)

The wind is quite strong in Whampoa area today so I don't bring Brian out.  So boring at home!  Hope the typhoon will go soon.

ljsze,

Hope Davin will get well soon.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-9 20:10

ljsze,Doris,
I regret that I take this week off and the weather is so bad. Anyway, we went to the toy library yesterday and went to visit Preston's cousins at Shatin and just came back from dinner (it's my maid's birthday and we took her out for dinner). Now I'm thinking what to do tomorrow?!
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-10 10:35

Lydia,

Too bad that the typhoon changed direction and signal No. 1 is hoisted again!  I guess the weather will not be good this weekend.  :(
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-10 11:36

Yes, too bad.  Good thing is that it's not that hot these few days.

It turned out that I got sick as well & I went to the doctor this morning.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-11 12:08

ljsze,

I am sorry to know that you got sick. Get well soon.

Dear all,

I brought Brian to LH this morning for the Art class.  All teachers were there preparing for the new academic year.  I talked to Miss Cheng and knew that she becomes the head teacher of LH.     She will be responsible for teacher training in the new academic year and she will not be a class teacher of any class.

I also talked to Miss Lai.  She is very nice.  I could see that she talked to Cheuk Yan and Brian patiently and the kids liked to talk to her as well.
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-13 09:49

Doris

Really happy to know that Miss Cheng got promoted.

Dear All

Davin got sick again & is absent from school.  His body temperature has not been stable.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-13 12:55

ljsze,
So sorry to hear that you and Davin got sick. Does it mearn he will miss the 1st day today? Hope get well soon.

Doris,ljsze,
Preston is so happy to be bact to school (same as Brian when I saw him this am). I guess the school should let all the kids go to school the same time instead of separate into 2 sessions, so the kids can meet all the friends at the same time.
This year, they have the school most prettiest and handsome teachers and they seem very nice too. Hope they enjoy the school year. Also, congrat to Miss Cheng to become the head of teachers and she deserves it. So it's good she will go around to different classrooms and the kids can see her often.

Lydia

I recovered after one day of medication.  Yes, Davin missed school today.  Just received call from Miss Lai.  We know each other in summer camp & I know she's a nice teacher.  I really hope that after a full-day rest at home, Davin will be fine & can go back to school tmr.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-13 16:38

ljsze,

Hope Davin will get well soon and be back tomorrow.

Miss Lai is a nice teacher and I could see that the kids all cooperated with her and Mr. Shawn today.  This is a good start and I am sure the kids will enjoy their K2 life.

Lydia,

Yes, Brian is so happy to be back to school as well.  He couldn't help screaming when he saw Preston and Cheuk Yan at the playground outside the Fisherman's Wharf.

I also think that it's better to let the kids of the same class go to school the same time.  It's a bit 'strange' to see only half of the class in the classroom.
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-13 17:13

Davin also misses school.  For his case, it's better because he joined the Summer Camp.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-13 19:06

ljsze,Doris,
Preston sure misses Davin. He's so excited to see his girl friends again today. He's the only boy in the am session. Anyway, it's a brand new start for him to attend full-day class tomorrow. It's good that the afternoon session is taught in Mandarin. Hope he'll be more independent and out-going. Miss Cheng also told me that there may be more outing and performance in the afternoon for full-day students.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-14 10:23

Lydia,

It's good that there are more outing in the afternoon for full-day students and they can also have more time on Mandarin.

BTW, my maid has been back from Philippines (I let her go back for 2 weeks as my parent and my hubby were not in HK).  So far, her performance is alright, except that she is not quite enthusiastic in playing with Brian.  Hope it will be better later.

ljsze,

Does Davin feel better today?
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-14 10:32

Lydia

What do you mean by saying that Preston is the only boy in am session ?

Doris

The body temperature of Davin shot up again last night & stay at around 103 degrees.  Went to the emergency unit this morning.  Doctor also said it's normal fever.  I was worried last night because Davin shivered for 15 minutes & his temperature shot up.  I didn't quite sleep.  Needless to say, he is absent from school today.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-14 13:08

ljsze,
Too bad to hear that Davin is still sick. Sometimes fever can last for a few days, monitor him well and give him plenty of water.
On the 1st day, the class was separated into 2 classes, from 9-10 and 10:30-11:30. Preston was in the former one and there should be Cheuk Yan as well (was Davin also in 9 o'clock session). Cheuk Yan missed it and so ended up Preston was the only boy and all the others were girls.

Preston will start full-day class today. I hope he can adapt well.

Talk to her firmly about your expectation. Make sure she understands and said you need to see improvement. If you don't do this firmly in the beginning, it's difficult to change her behaviour later.

See. Understand now.  What a strange arrangement to have the class split into two in the first days !

I do hope that I don't have to stay awake again tonight to monitor his body temperature.

Doris, Lydia

I visited a Kumon centre in Kln City last week.  It was small & in a classroom setting.  Everyone is doing exercise on their own.  Is it the same as the centre that your son attends ?

ljsze,

Brian was in emergency unit once when he was in PN.  His body temperature rose up to 104.5 degrees at night even after taking paracetamol.  The nurse did some urine tests and the doctor said nothing could be done, except giving him more paracetamol.  His high fever persisted for three days.

Give Davin more water.  Take baths for him or wipe his body using wet towels.  He will get well soon.

Lydia,

Thanks for your advice.  I will talk to her when the situation persists.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  Up till now, his fever has persisted for 3 days (very high at night for 2 days).

ljsze,
How's Davin tonight? Hope he's fine. There was one time that Preston had a fever up to 40.5C and lasted for more than 1 week. That was the time after going to jumping gym 'ball ball chi'. Preston said he missed Davin.

Doris,
Does Brian like your new maid? If she treats Brian well, it will definitely show. Preston likes my maid so much, every time she comes back from holiday, Preston will run at her and show her any new toys or tells her what he did that day at once. I'm sure she takes good care and has lots of patience playing with him.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-15 08:24

ljsze,

How is Davin today?  Brian told me last night that Ka Ka was also absent for two days.  Hope she's fine as well.

Lydia,

Brian likes the maid. (afterall, she's pretty, ha!)  She will play with Brian, but only for a short while every time.  Maybe she needs more time to observe how my hubby and I play with Brian and learn.

Davin slept a lot yesterday & his temperature was stabilized. Still fine at night.  Yet, this morning it went up to some 101 degrees again.  Didn't look too bad but he has no bowel movement for 3 days.

Ended up that he has to stay at home for another day.  Too bad.  He also misses his friends.

Hope Davin can recover soon. Does he have appetite and is he still playful? Usually if they're still playful, it's not too bad.

It's funny last night that Preston suddenly looked at my wedding picture and said 'Mom, you're so pretty and looks like Cinderalla". He really made my night.

not too bad yesterday but slept a lot.  he called me earlier & said he had gone out for bicycle ride.  then i guess he should be okay now.  i'll get back home earlier to check on him.  really hope that he could go to school & meet his friends tmr.

sometimes davin also give comment to my outlook.  it's interesting & cute.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-15 20:44

ljsze,
It's good that he rides the bike that means he's still active and wants to play. Don't worry he'll back to school soon.

I think Miss Lai is a good teacher, she called me today to tell me Preston's situation at school already. She seems to be a caring teacher too.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-16 09:13

ljsze,

If Davin wants to play, it means that he is not feeling sick any more.  Has his fever gone already?

Lydia,

I agree with you that Miss Lai is a good teacher.  I talked to her last Sat and this Mon.  When she knew that I am pregnant, she gave me lots of suggestions about how to make Brian cope with the change.  Very nice and caring!
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-16 09:51

Doris, Lydia

I also think that Miss Lai is good.  And, Mr. Shawn is quite talkative as well.

Finally, Davin can go to school today.  He's happy to see his friends again.  Many teachers noticed that he had been absent for a few days.  Body temperature stabilizes but still sweats a lot.  Need to keep checking on him for one or two more days.  When he got into the classroom, Brian was the first one to talk to Davin & asked if Davin was okay.  Mr. Shawn said the kids kept asking where Mizuki, Davin & Cheuk Ka were (both absent for a few days).  They have really grown.

Cheuk Ka is also back to school today.  Mizuki is still on leave.  I heard that she's still in Japan & will be back in September.

I also noticed that there are fewer kids in K2B which I think is good.

It's good to hear that Davin and Ka Ka are back to school.
It's good that the kids go back to school and everything is back to normal. I need to reschedule his interest classes. It's more difficult coz he's in full-day class now.

Yes, agree.  What course do you intend to let Preston take ?  Art / Math / Music / EQ / Putonghua / English / any other ?  I think in your case, you will have to spend a lot of time taking Preston for lessons on Saturday.

It's glad to hear that Davin has recovered. My daughter - Hei Ching missed him a lot and told me she hasn't found your son in the class. She shows a bit sad.

I am happy to have chance to meet some K2B parents in BK. Actually, I usually stay in primary school side because I need to keep an eye for my elder daughter's school issue. Anyway, really nice to chat / discuss here as you all are caring parents.

I think those crabs & shells were brought for Summer Camp.
We saw those when Davin attended the course.

Last...Get well soon....

Hi bblaw,

Did you really see me before in primary forum ? Did we talk and share ?

As a working mom, I want to plan the activities for my daughters wisely as spare time is valuable and limited. he he...Be honest, up to this moment, I still have not planned any ECA for Hei Ching. Sometimes, she feels boring at home especially I take my elder daugther out for activities. Most probably I will enrol a ballet course for her and kick-off piano learning from Jan 2008. I hope she can join the School Speech / Music Festival in K3 and the profile for applying primary schools should be pretty enough. Which primary schools will you apply for your kid ?

Hei Ching mommi

Try to find if there is any school that your kid can go at the same time so it saves your time while both of them can learn something.

Btw, where do you live ? Tokwawan ?

I haven't planned which schools to apply for.  I used to live in HK side & I don't have much idea as to which schools in Kln are good.
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-18 17:39

Hi ljsze,

Actually, I plan to help Hei Ching to enrol for a ballet class which is same as her elder sister. However, the class for 4 yrs old and grade 3 (my elder sister) are not matched according to the timetable. That's why I still have not paid the school fee.

Yes, we live in Tokwawan. Just behind Bailey Garden. Why do you help your son to apply for a kindergarten in Kowloon side but you live in Hong Kong Island ? Will you still try to look for a primary school in Kowloon ? For my case, I really hope that Hei Ching can get a place in her elder sister's. My elder one is now studying in Alliance Primary School, Kowloon Tong. That's why I want to start the piano class for her ASAP.

作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-18 21:27

Hei Ching mom,
What's Alliance Primary school in Chinese? Is it a co-ed school and do they use traditional teaching method?
It's difficult to say which primary school to apply coz I don't know which type is suitable for Preston. I don't want to choose the wrong type and he's not happy studying. Of course my dream school will be DBS but not much expectatation due to the competition. Preston is so shy that I don't think he's ready for the school/music festival.

bblaw,
Does Ka ka like full-day school? Preston was excited the 1st day and then the 2nd day Miss lai told me he was upset when he saw some classmates leaving at 12:00. I guess he needs some time to get used to the new routine. Does Ka ka sleep in the naptime? Any change after going to full-day?
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-19 01:03

Hi LydiaWong,

My elder daughter's primary school is: 九龍塘宣道小學. It is a private and  band 1 primary school in Kowloon Tong. Although it is not a "one-dragon", it can obtain good secondary school allocation result every year. Over 85% of P6 students are band one and the remaining are band 2. I like it because my elder one loves music.

Of course, DBS is a good primary school for boys but the competition is also keen. If you really like it, you can let Preston to try. Do you think your son can get a good primary school in round 1 (by marking scheme) ? If not, then it's almost time to think and plan. I got some interesting stuff from my friends regarding DBS interview to share with you....

Round 1: the boys sit in the interview / test by themselves....
Round 2: (less than 20% lucky kids) Parents and kids have an interview with the principal.
Round 3: (final round)....talent show....piano, violin, cello, swimming....etc...some of them (from rich families) even have an accompanist when giving the musical performance to the DBS teachers...

ha ha...maybe a bit overstate...but this happens every year in private schools interview. Even though it is my second time to face it, I feel very worry because Hei Ching is a shy girl and not so talkative as her sister.

Dear all,

Brian enjoyed Hei Hei's birthday party very much today.  Hei Hei's Mom has chosen a wonderful place for kids (as parents as well).  Brian skipped the afternoon nap since the new school year started but I let him take a nap this afternoon as he was so tired after playing for two hours.

Lydia,

Brian is going to have a sister and the EDD is early November.  He is so excited and he keeps on asking me why his sister is still 'hiding' is my belly.  Ha!

ljsze,

You looked tired today.  Get well soon!

Hei Ching's Mom,

It's wonderful if Hei Ching can go to the same school with her sister.  It saves much time in taking care of them during school days as they can take the same school bus.

Hei Ching mom,
Thanks for your sharing. I know there is only little chance to get in and Preston is a shy boy too. My friend's boy just got in this year, I'm not sure if he's smart, but he's not shy and quite mature and good at swimming. He attended 2 kindergartens( one in am and one in afternoon) and he has a lot of ECA. Will Hei Ching has an advantage to get into Alliance since her elder sis is studying there?

Doris,
Preston was a bit shy at the beginning. Brian is very outgoing now compared when he was in PN. What a good change. The party was great and Preston is also sleeping now. Need to wake him up otherwise he doesn't want to sleep tonight.

It turned out that Brian napped for an hour yesterday afternoon but he couldn't sleep well at night.  It took me over an hour to bring him to bed and he woke up twice in mid-night.

BTW, why did your friend let his son study in two kindergartens?  Just want the kid to learn more?  That's too much for a kinder kid!

Wow, I missed a lot of your conversation.

Thanks to Doris for your care.
I suffer from inflammation of eyes.
These two days I slept more but the illness make me look & feel a bit tired.

Hei Ching mommi, I used to live in HK side before marriage.
Though I’ve been living in Kln side for some years, I don’t have much idea as to which schools in Kln are good.
For certain, I know
Alliance
Primary School is a good one.
According to you, does the school emphasizes on music development ?
FYI, I live in
Kln
City.

DBS is definitely good but is too competitive.
Taking kids to two kinders & a lot of ECA is too much & I agree with
Doris.
Doris, since you’re a teacher, maybe you have advantage in enrolling Brian in a good school.

For me, La Salle is on my top priority.
I do think it will give much pressure to me but I only know
La Salle is a good school in Kln side.
I may also consider schools in HK side (my mom’s living in Western District).

作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-20 12:52

Lydia,

Brian did show improvement as he's getting bigger.  However, his social skills are still weak.  He had as assessment in CAC again last week.  It was found that his concentration is still weak and he couldn't express himself well.

ljsze,

Brian only has advantage in going to the primary session of my school but not the others.  Personally, I prefer a co-ed school but my school is a boys' school.

作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-20 13:15

ljsze,
It's good you live in 41district and have a higher chance to get in. I'm just thinking what kind of school is suitable for Preston, a traditional one or more active approach. I'm afaid a traditional one has too much pressure and also suppress one's creativity. It's a headache to think about this topic.

Doris,
Any follow-up for Brian to improve his attention span and social skills? Preston is not good at social skills and I plan to let him take the EQ course again in Sept.
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-20 13:44

Doris

You mentioned that Brian took assessment.  Regarding the issue of concentration & self-expression, do you notice that he has got a problem (if you do not take a test) ?  Or, is it just minor ?  Btw, which school do you teach ?

Lydia

I do agree that traditional school suppresses one's creativity.  School selection is really a headache to all the parents.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-20 18:57

Lydia,

Brian was referred to Heep Hong (Pak Tin Centre) again for group training.  I just wonder whether his concentration span can be improved in group training.  What's more, Pak Tin is too far away.  Anyway, I will let Brian join the training for several weeks to see if it helps.

ljsze,

Brian's short concentration span is quite significant, esp at home.  Miss Cheng told me that Brian would lose concentration in class as well but the situation was improved in the second term.  For self-expression, I think it's a matter of time.

For the school in which I teach, pls check PM.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-20 19:17

Doris,
I think a group situation can improve social skills more than concentration. But on the other hand, a group is closer to real situation in which you need to pay attention in class to what the teacher said intead of one-to-one basis. The EQ course Preston took also trained that too. Preston was only fair in this aspect. What Dr. Chow did was she read a story with different objects in it. The kids had a picture of all the objects and they had to listen carefully to what objects appeared in the story and the amount. Then they needed to color the objects very fast while still paying attention to the story. Preston got little marks in the beginning coz he colored too slow but later on he knew the rules and did better. It's not easy for kids but Dr. Chow said they should be able to get most of them.

ljsze,Doris,
Have you heard of Po Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau? I heard it's a very good school and not traditional. It's not easy to get in either and they teach in Mandarin. Cressida's mom told me that Cressida went for a Mandarin prestation competition yesterday b4 coming for the birthday party. She's a brilliant girl.
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-20 23:28

Hi LydiaWong,

I don't think Hei Ching have much advantage when applying APS. She still needs to attend the interview and no extra mark will be added even her elder sister is an APS student. Anyway, will try best .....

Hi ljsze,
Being a APS parent, I will tell you that it will be pity if your kid does not learn musical instrument. They look for the best musical tutors in town to lead the orchestra and teach the students. If you will consider APS for your kids, please make sure at least they don't hate music. he he...

That's good if your target school is La Salle and you are now living in district 41. You can try to apply this school in 2 rounds. However, you should aware the heavy workload for being a LS boys. My best friend's son will be a P4 boy in LS from next month. Since she is a working mom, she has arranged her son to a tutorial centre every day (after school) when he was P2. Although it costs her more than $3000 every month, she can keep good relationship with her son after work. As I don't know if you are a full-time mother or not, but please aware that taking care the homework/exam for a primary school student is not a easy job. (especially for those studying in famous schools unless you don't care about their ranking.)

Doris, Lydia

You've really done a lot to help your kid improve in different aspects.

Lydia

I know Choi Kai Yau is quite popular because of its teaching method & having 2 teachers in each class.  If you read the yr book of LH, there are quite many graduates going to this school.  If you aim at your kid studying abroad, this is a good choice I think.

Hei Ching mommi

I know the case of top school like La Salle & DBS.  I talk to some parents of these schools but seems that the kids can manage.  It's more of a problem of parent.  Got to start checking for more alternatives within & across district.

Hei Ching mom,
Preston is learning piano for a year now. He doesn't really enjoy it but he won't hate it. I guess his talent is not in music. But thanks for your advice and I'll consider what school is sutiable for him.

ljsze,
I don't think I've done a lot for Preston, just he needs more attention in some aspects. I just do the best I can. I think a lot moms do a better job than I do.

Lydia, ljsze,

Choi Kai Yau is a popular school.  The curriculum they adopted is in-house designed for lower levels and the school will use the British National curriculum and will follow the IB programme in higher levels.
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-22 00:29

Hi LydiaWong,

May I know if Preston is now learning piano with private session (1:1) or in small group ? Is the progress OK ? I have asked my elder's piano teacher in summer holiday when Hei Ching can start learning. She replied Hei Ching is too small and her concentration span is too short. That's why I postpone it to 6 months later.

Hei Ching mommi

Hei Ching seemed not that happy this morning.  What's the problem ?

Lydia

Wait & see if Preston will keep learning piano.  It's fine if he does not enjoy that much.  We can't really push.  May pick other instrument for him.  Nonetheless, I think it's great that Preston can play a song.

Doris

As you are a teacher, aren't you the best resource for school selection ?  Ha ha.  May we ask you more about different schools ?  Nonetheless, it's okay if you think not appropriate.  I know that somehow teacher's pt of view is different from parent's.

Dear All

Miss Lai called me again & we talked a lot about the kid.  Unlike Miss Cheng, she talks more about areas for improvement.  She may not present it in a pleasant way but it's good to know so that we can work together to help the child grow.  Btw, I have the feeling that Miss Lai do have expectation from the kid.

作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-22 13:17

ljsze,
I also feel that Miss Lai has expectations to the kids as well. Mr. Shawn called me yesterday and told me Preston was getting used to whole day class now. He's also impressed with Preston's English level. He's nice(and cute ).
I'll let Preston continue piano lesson at the meantime coz he's playing Ok despite that he doesn't practice much. Will wait and see what's his interest is.

Hei Ching mom,
Preston attended Parson at age of 2 1/2 but he did not perform well. So last year, I let him try 1:1 piano class and he was OK. The lesson is 30min and he's fine. Preston can read the notes and play a whole song by himself, only that it's not fluent coz he doesn't practice much. I think girl should be better, you can let Hei Ching try.
作者: DorisTSL    時間: 07-8-22 13:31

ljsze,

I know more about secondary schools than primary schools.  However, some of my colleagues' husbands or wives work in primary schools and they can provide more information.  If you want to know more about a particular school, just let me know.

BTW, I think teachers' expectation from a kid will change when they get older.  It's good if the teacher can let parents know his or her expectation and the parents will know what to do.

Lydia,

Have you decided how to reschedule Preston's interest classes?  Brian used to have Kumon Math class on Saturday afternoon but I will change the time to weekday afternoon next month.

ECA for Sept onward should more or less be fixed.  Better enrol asap.

Doris

Thanks for your kindness. Once I come across any school that I'd like to know more, I will raise it up.

ljsze,
Thanks for your reminder. Just need to find the time to do it. Actually there is no rush, it's good if he can start in Sept, otherwise, later is fine too.

Doris,
Please do share with us about school info. Which day will you change the Kumon class? Preston used to go on Tuesday. Will Cheuk Yan change as well? Why do you want to change the Sat class? Any other class for Brian on Sat?

Hi ljsze,

Thanks for telling that Hei Ching was not happy this morning. Since her sister did not go with her to the kindergarten, maybe she felt a bit sad. Even they 'fight' for toys, story books, TV programmes every day, I can sure they love & miss each other in heart. he he.... Since my elder one is still enjoying her summer holiday, Hei Ching sometimes does not willing to go to school because she wants to play with her sister at home. Hope the situation can be improved starting from September.

Hi Lydia,

Thanks for your sharing and happy to know that Preston can play a song by recognizing the notes. He is only a K2 boy. Hei Ching loves singing but not really interested in playing piano. Anyway, will let her to try after Christmas.

Hi all,

Just want to know if your kids can handle the homework well every day. In K1, my girl enjoyed doing her homework and finished them happily. However, I find that Hei Ching does not really like the writing homework. Sometimes, she refuses to write the words for more than 10 times and shows a sad face to me. I will try to give her some encouragement and ask my elder to give me a hand. See if the situation can be improved later.....

Hei Ching mommi

I understand that.  We all know that having siblings is much better than single child in the family.

I can understand why Hei Ching does not like 'copy book'.  It's quite boring to write the same character over & over again.  Davin had been sick for a few days.  I saw 2 copy books in the folder & I tried to ask him finish both & he also refused to do so.  Agree that encouragement is important.

Did Miss Lai or Mr Shawn call you to discuss about Hei Ching ?

Lydia

I know Preston can recognize many English words.  Is there any way to help him ?

Dear All

I will enrol Davin for Enopi math.  This is quite new.  Having seen the methodology & the content, I would like to give it a try.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-23 13:12

Hei Ching mom,
I'm sure Hei Ching will love piano once she starts coz most girls like music.

ljsze,
I have no idea why he knows all the English words. He just loves reading. He reads when he's eating (need to discourage this), in the toilet (poopoo ), b4 going to bed...Recently he is interested in reading the guide book(for parents) of the DWE books. There are 180 pages with small words and he just keeps reading and reading. I find them boring to read and I've never read them. Sometimes he doen't want to sleep and would bargin to read more. I guess he learns his english from reading.
I learnt about Enopi math at the bookfair and seems the method is quite good. Let us know the effect.

All,
I'm not sure if Preston likes to do the writing homework. I just check them when I get home. He finishes them b4 I get home. I need to ask my maid about this.

Dear all,

Brian didn't refuse to do the copy books but he just wanted to finish them as soon as possible so he could play afterwards.

Lydia,

Both Cheuk Yan's Mom and I think that the Whampoa Kumon centre is a bit far away.  It takes us 15-20 minutes to get there.  We plan to let Cheuk Yan and Brian change to the centre in Fisherman's Wharf.  However, the only time slot available for kinder kids is Tuesday afternoon.

Hi ljsze,

I still have not received any phone call from Miss Lai & Mr. Shawn. Maybe I will give her a call next week. Actually, I am terribly busy recently for my work and can only back home after 9:00 p.m.. That's why I turn crazy when Hei Ching tries to finish her homework slowly......I can hardly imagine my life when my elder back to school next month.

Hi all,

Any comments for the English Courses offered by British Council ? especially those for kindergarten kids.

晞晴媽咪

Hi, moms,
I asked my maid and she said Preston could finish the homework fast. Actually I want to develop a habit that he finishes all the homework by himself and when I come home, I just need to check them. Hope this can last till primary school.

Doris,
Do you take the shuttle bus to Kumon? I think the one in Whampoa is good cos they have lots of students and have story time for youger kids. Of course the one in Fisherman's Wharf is much closer. Better ask about the quality of teachers b4 you make a change.

Hei Ching mom,
I want to know about the BC too. What kind of English course are you interested in? My collegue's daughter had taken courses there but that was a few years ago. Also, I'm thinking of Star Gallery. Need to go and check.

Hei Ching's Mom,

I can understand how stressful it is to take care of kids and work at the same time.  However, I think Hei Ching will soon change in Sept, when her sister has to do homework everyday with her.

For the English course, is there any special area that you want of focus on?  phonics? oral? ......
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-24 00:20

Hi Lydia,

Please help me to give a big thumb to Preston as he is doing well for his study. If he can develop a habit to finish all the homework by himself during kindergarten, he can custom to primary school life in a short time. "Add Oil"....

I am interested in this English course offered by British Council. However, it seems that I have missed the enrollment deadline. Maybe I will check the schedule again and help my girl to apply for next term.

Hi Doris,

Thanks for the kind words. BTW, I don't have a specific target / area for the English courses. hm......oral may be better and can enhance the communication skill for Hei Ching to face the P1 interview. Any good suggestion ?

I can’t believe that it takes 15-20 mins getting to from LV to Whampoa.

Hei Ching mommi

Maybe your girl does not have any problem & that’s why the teachers haven’t called you.
Of course, we may call them anytime.
And, Doris is very right that it will get better when both of your kids have to do homework.
I don’t know if the course of BC is good but it’s quite popular.

What a busy work life you’ve got ?

Lydia

Good to see that Preston has got the initiative to finish homework.
For Davin, whenever he goes to my mom’s home every Wed/Thur, he finishes homework by himself.
For other days, he’ll wait for me.
I don’t understand why.

Dear moms,
Actually Preston finishes his homework fast when he is in the mood. But I have to give some credit to my maid coz she has a lot of patience teaching him (same as my previous maid). That really help me out a lot.

Hei Ching mom,
You can call Miss Lai or Mr Shawn to ask about the performance of Hei Ching. I guess they call me twice already coz Preston just change to full-day class and they would let me know his adaptation at school. Like Miss Cheng they are really nice and would tell you a lot about their daily performace.

Will you go to the meeting on Friday? Please remind me later next week. I always forgot this kind of function.:loveliness:

Hi Lydia,

You're so lucky that your maid can give you a hand for Preston's homework. For the parent's meeting, I really hope that I can join and know more about the K2 requirement from the school. However, it all depends on my current project schedule. For the worst, I can ask my husband to join or.....may you all drop a note for the presentation outline to me....

Many Thanks,

Dear moms

More work for us.  We have to help sharing news every week.  Nonetheless, I think it's a very good idea.

Have you sent your kid to development test & eye test required by Health Clinic of the Gov't ?  For eye test, we can only do this in Hung Hom every Wed.  Schedule is not flexible at all.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-27 18:57

Hei Ching mom,
You really are a busy working mom. No problem, I can take some notes for you if you can't make it. I'm lucky that I can leave at 5:00pm every day. Sometimes if I come home late, Preston would complain why I was late and where had I gone (like he's the housekeeper!)

ljsze,
I wonder if there is any news that is suitable for them and they will understand. Anyway, I agree is a good idea. (hope I remember every week).
Do you mean the 4-yr old assessment at the MCHC? When Preston did it, there was no eye test, maybe Preston is already wearing glasses, so there is no need?! The assessment was so simple that any 3 yr old can do it. Just count and stack up 4 blocks and recognise a few colors and objects and ask you a few questions. But I apply the 3P program after that.
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-27 22:54

Hi Lydia,

I am happy to knowing all of you in BK that can share some news for the kids' study here. Recently, I am busy with budget preparation and can only back home late. When I was working in Chinese University a few years ago, I can leave at 5:00 p.m. every day (just like you...he he...). However, after I decided to change my job to work in a business firm, my nightmare began and now...you know my hard life...ha ha...

BTW, Thanks again and hope I can join the parents meeting this Friday.

Lydia

Have you fixed all the ECA for Preston ?  Does he get very tired by the time you return home since he takes full-day class ?
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-28 13:09

ljsze,
He's OK after full-day class, sleep at the same time as b4. Miss Jill (responsible for kids' sleep) said he was able to sleep for a short time ~1/2 hr. So I guess he's not too tired. But so far not much ECA at weekdays. Still not arrange his new schedule yet.
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-28 14:20

Lydia

Half an hour cannot be qualified as nap.  So, I guess he has to go to bed at about 9am.  When does he wake up in the morning ?
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-28 19:19

ljsze,
I also wonder if he can really sleep for 1/2 hour only. His usual naptime was ~3o'clock and slept for about 2 hours. Now at school the naptime is after lunch ~1 o'clock. But Miss Jill had an individual naptime datasheet for every kid and said he could sleep at around 1:30, then woke up at 2o'clock. Anyway, even he doesn't take a nap, it's OK, coz he hates taking nap. He usually goes to bed at ~9pm and read books. So by the time he actaully falls asleep is ~9:30-10:00pm.

Hi all,

Do you know any good optical shop for arranging glasses for small kids, 4 - 5 years old ? Don't worry. It is not for Hei Ching. My colleague asked me this morning and I just want to source some information for her.

Hi Lydia,

Please kindly send me a PM for the optical shop in WanChai.

Hi ljsze,

You can consider to buy the educational toys from WiseKid or a good book shop (opposite to Kingcow) in 2/F., Lee Garden II. They have a lot of good books (especially pop-up style) that Hei Ching also loves them very much.

晞晴媽咪
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-29 21:20

Hei Ching mom,
Pls check pm.

ljsze,
I don't buy a lot of toys now coz sometimes if I buy him toys, he may not like to play. His favorite toys are still buses and cars and carparks. Sometimes we'll play board games or uno. However, he wants to win all the time and doens't like to follow the rules. Psychologist said it's normal and can't help this situation at home coz we are adults and we're playing under an unfair condition. So we usually let him win. Now I don't bother searching toys for him anymore.
作者: 晞晴媽咪    時間: 07-8-29 22:02

Hi Lydia,

I got your PM. Thanks very much. BTW, Hei Ching also likes to play UNO with her sister but they both want to win all the time. So....we just let them take turn to be the winner...ha ha...

Hi ljsze,

Back to your last question. When I decided to work in a business firm 7 years ago, I did not feel regret to leave CU. Be honest, working in an university/government is quite boring. Moreover, it is difficult to fight for a permanent term and I hate working as a contract staff. Now, my current job can offer me good remuneration package but long working hours...

Hei Ching's mommi

Thanks for your info of toy shop & book store.

The contract & permanent terms of civil servant are so different.  I can understand your feeling.  Some mothers are more career-minded.  Are you the one ?  Do you plan to stay in the same company for a long period of time ?

Dear All

I don't buy many toys but as our kids grow up, I'm thinking of different kinds of toys / games in which through play they can really learn something.  I just bought scrabble & it's quite good.
作者: LydiaWong    時間: 07-8-30 12:39

Hei Ching mom,
You're welcome. I work in a hospital and luckily I am permanant staff. But sometimes it's too stable I want to try other outlet too. Anyway, it's good if you have a rewardable pay and you like the job.

ljsze,
I plan to buy scrabble too, which one did you buy?The junior one or the ordinary one?
作者: ljsze    時間: 07-8-30 14:56

Lydia

If you think Preston is good enough to play Junior Scrabble, you may buy one.  Mine is my first Scrabble.

There's always trade-off if you opt for job outside the Gov't.  Better pay but for sure longer working hour.  You have to be punctual at work but never think you can leave at normal office hour.
