My son is studying  in Wah Yan Primary school now. As
his English  is getting worse and I dilslike the "over"
traditional teaching method of Wah Yan, I want to change the school.

I have already given the registration deposit of $11800
to KCIS. But now, I have a little bit hesitate.  I don't
know this change is good or bad for my son.
please give me some suggestion.

If it is just English, there are other ways to catch up.  The $28,000 tuition fee can be spent in another way, like hiring one or more NET tutors to keep up your son's English fluency with other English school pupils for the time being.

If it's about the traditionalness, it depends more on your son's fitting into this school than on your own opinion.

Frankly speaking, I don't like Wah Yan either for some personal reasons.  But I don't think you should change for change's sake.  The bottom line is whether KCIS a better choice for your son.  And have you considered and compared other schools b4 you made this decision?

Except the poor English performance, I dislike the
teachers of Wah Yan Primary school. Many of them are
so lazy and don't teach so hard as they think all students
can learn the books from private tutors. Especially a male
English teacher, he is so lazy and always not resposible to
his students. My husband & I must work very very hard with my son as he can't learn any things from school.

I also know that KCIS is not a famous school. As I have
spoken before, my son's English performance is not so
well. He is rejected by another international schools.
Therefore I can only arrange him to KCIS first as stepping stone. I will try again to arrange him to another IS one
year later.

Although I dislike Wah Yan, I miss it after I have made the
decision to change.  In the beginning, my husband & I
have put a lot of efforts to enter Wah Yan. I miss the
my son's school life in Wah Yan and other parents.

This is the conflict in my heart.

It's sad to hear your misfortune there.

Other than KCIS, have you tried other local schools?

May I know the full name of KCIS?  In which year is your son in now?  For ESF and RC, did your son fail in the interview or their waiting list is too long that they cannot offer your son an interview yet?

yeung2212,
Although KCIS may not be the first choice, it must not be a bad choice. I have heard many many good comments from different parents studying in KCIS (primary and kinder). My girl will go to KCIS K1 the coming Sept. The only bad things I heard from parents about KCIS is their old campus.
You never know if you don't try. If you don't like KCIS, you can still find another good DSS / private / IS.
Hope the best for you and your little boy

My son has failed both the screening interviews of ESF & RC because he can't reach their english requirments. We only waited one month for the interview of ESF and one & half month for RC.

It is a fact that Wah Yan boys that they are English not good because they are Chinese school. Cannot help. Secondary Wah Yan thinked that they cannot accept all wha yan primary because bad english standard primary. I know my husband told me that those wah yan boys secondary graduated after 1980 are all bad english, not like CE Tsang's long gone days.

Not a bad idea if you think you need your boy to catch up his english and cahnge school.

Yeung2212,

I'm thinking to apply Wah Yan for my son next year. Could you help me for more information? such as:
1. do they use Mandarin to teach Chinese subject?
2. any English Math?

Do you know how many P6 get into their secondary?

Thank you in advance for your help

Dear Yeung2212,

As far as I know, La Salle, St. Paul Happy Valley, True Light and Raimondi and many are using Chinese as the medium of English.  Only in the upper class the use of English language will be put in a higher portion.

For secondary schools, only 114 of them are using English as medium of instruction, I think you are referring to those, there are no mandatory English teaching school in Hong Kong.

Not sure if you have done research before you are placing the kids to any school, if you are having such negative feeling to the schools that might influence your own kid.

As you have mentioned your son has tried ESF and RC but all fail probably due to the English language, have you taken any remedy approach to resolve the issue, such as create the English environment or discuss with his English teacher?  About the teacher or teaching method, have you raised the issue to the Principal or Parent Teacher Association so as to focus on the issue that others have not realized?  If not, this is subjective opinion.

Since you have placed your younger son to KCIS and have already enrolled your older son, you should be more familiar to KCIS in terms of the academic standard or the school curriculum.

Hope you will find the ideal school to your sons.

Dear fannycheungmc,

As mentioned, that is not mandatory for the primary school to be either English or Chinese.  This is only the secondary school which to use English as the teaching medium language required the approval from the EMB.

Chinese school does not mean poor English and so as English school does not mean poor Chinese.  Criticize without fact support will sometimes scare people.
