Would like to know if parents of ADHD children can offer any insights. Understood ESF has program for ADHD kids but the school cannot offer any details. It's very difficult to get a place too.

What about other schools?

We are thinking to get in to grade 3. Thank you.

My friend's kid is ADHD and he is in ESF higher primary now. The so call support by ESF is mainly " not pushing your kid even if one cannot finish the task in class", nevertheless he still need to take meds everyday otherwise the teacher will still complain that he is not following in the class. At lower grade they will just let u be as far as you are not too disturbing.

At the end ESF is big class, I think one needs smaller class  and small homely school for better support.

Thank you for your response.

We've tried homey school environment like Garden House in Sai Kung. Teachers are kind and the atmosphere is peaceful but it does not help much with the out of control behaviours... which disturb the whole class and causes trouble to everyone.

I think all regular international schools are more tolerant in general, but never heard any of them have a really good program that can really help ADHD students. I know that some parents with SEN children were suggested to hire a special educational assistant just to take care of their child. This person will sit in all classes at school with the child, mostly to handle the behaviour issues and help the child fulfil class requirements (e.g.  reading, writing etc). Five to six years back, I heard that the cost is "萬幾蚊". A friend's child has a classmate who has his own assistant like that in an ESF school.
I suggest that you call each international to see whether they have special programs for ADHD children. Try to choose schools will really small class size. ESF has 30 students in each class (primary school). Probably not a good choice. I suggest you call Yew Chung and ISF. These school has really small class size (may be around 20, or even fewer). But both are expensive schools and ultimately you might still be suggested to hire an special educational assistant.
Does your child speak any Cantonese at all? I feel that the SEN support for English speaking children is not quite sufficient and is probably more expensive. If he speaks Cantonese, there are probably more support available.

Thanks so much. I was thinking if 自然學校  is a good choice but it seems they do not have English speaking teachers.

It's so sad that parents of SEN kids have no help in school selection at all. Need to depend on hear-say information but no one can really give you any assistance.

Thank you for your response.
If u are talking about out of control behaviour, I don't think regular ESF school can really provide any good support, they are big class setting. I know many IS with so called special care support is to ask you to hire a shadow teacher to accompany and to look after the kid on 1:1 basis. If you need special training, most are provide by government/NGO you may look up for that.

Actually ESF is a pretty good choice for SEN kids, especially if you're lucky enough to get a place in SEN stream. They have a SEN department which provides various kinds of support to students with SEN. My daughter was diagnosed as having ADHD, even though she's in mainstream class, ESF still provide extra support to her such as training programs (during school hours), additional supporting teacher in classroom to make her stay focus on her tasks or to handle her emotional issues, and parent-teacher meeting to set up objective and goals and to explain the progress of students. ESF always emphasizes inclusion that's why generally teachers and staff are nice and friendly and they take care of all children physically and mentally. Class teacher never complains about my daughter so far and they didn't ask for any further assessment nor medical treatment. All these supports are included in normal school fee, I don't have to pay extra. I am very happy with their support so far. But having said that, situations may vary from case to case, and also different campus may have teachers with different experience and quality. My little one is in year 1 now, only few months experience may not represent the overall picture.

You can also go to EK special need section, there is ADHD section, the parents may be more informative there regarding this issue.

Did you disclose your daughter's special need when applying to the esf school? I wonder if that would favor or go against the application...

Thanks everyone.

rakui, may I know which ESF your daughter is attending?

My friend sent her daughter to Shatin College. She said the school support is excellent. Her daughter is now 15 years old; can hardly focus on task; and very emotional but the school teachers never complain about her. They give support to the parents as well. But Shatin College is bit too far location-wise. That said we try to do every possible thing to help our little one, as he is suffering every day in school now.

Thanks much parents. You all are very helpful.

For year 1, you need to submit 2 applications, one for SEN stream(which is very unlikely you can get a place if you have no priority at all) and the other one for mainstream. I don't think you can reach the SEN department if u don't have a place yet. Actually they arrange some seminars for some training organizations' users, such as Watchdog, but if you are not participating any trainings in those centers, you may not know their seminar schedule. I suggest you call the nearest school first, tell them your situation, and I think they will let you know details for admission/application. ESF allocation based on catchment area so you can check your nearest school in their website.
