Stay in LS till year 6 because it will help her with Chinese. Reading, writing and speaking Cantonese and Mandarin is vey important nowadays, especially for your children. Also in Australia, the education system is a lot more relaxed so it's better the kids learn discipline in HK's LS. Plus if both of you know how to speak English, just train your child up to have good spoken English by speaking it at home, as majority of kids in LS have good written English. Also just allow your kid to read more English books and watch English movies to catch up.

I think save the money on international school, it's more worthwhile to send your kid to a good private secondary school in Australia, especially if you move to Sydney, there's a big benefit with sending your child to a private school in secondary school.

My kids are studing LS (P2 and P4).  I am thinking about transferring them to IS so that they can have better English before going abroad for secondary school.

Yanange,

Do you think it is not necessary to go to IS at this stage?

What is the best age for going abroad?

Personally, I left at P.5 in term 1 from a local school and joined a primary school in Sydney with ESL, I redid P.4 and it helped because it had peer support, a buddy program to help me fit in, most importantly it had English as a second language. Learning Chinese isn't going to be easy as it takes rote learning so doing it first in a LS will benefit your child a lot. To be honest, I find Chinese harder than English as there's a lack of an alphabet; plus you stop improving your chinese because you don't study it at a secondary level. But for me 4 full primary school years of Chinese enables me to Read Chinese and speak Cantonese and Mandarin. I don't write very well in Chinese at all but it's good enough for business purposes.

Going to an IS for purposes of learning English or to train your child to think critically. I personally think that going to an IS isn't about learning English since I have quite a few cousins at EMI schools in HK and they speak English just as well, it's just they don't it frequently and the HK local school environment discourage kids  to speak it, that being said kids from the top end LS do well in English writing and listening, the speaking part will get adjusted as they live in Australia, as long as they are pronouncing properly. Their accents will fit in etc etc. You should be more worried about whether being in an IS will be beneficial in terms allowing to learn, analyse, be innovative and develop critical thinking.  IS allows space for a child to re-energise and think so that in itself makes a big difference.

problem is that is hard to get in those local EMI school. my husband can't speak any chinese, so we speak a lot English at home. I am concerned her chinese skill, bht I think I still prefer her studying in an emi school, otherwise, my husband can't get involved too much.

I think going to a local school where your child is happy and doing well socially, creatively, in sports and in music and in academics is as important as doing only well in test and in standardized scoring exercises likes TSA. there are plenty of EMIs and DDS which isn't absolutely top tier and does well. Put in this way, if your husband can't help now, he can't help later on in Chinese anyways if you want your children to learn Chinese thus from that perspective going to a LS school is more beneficial. IS in HK are a very costly exercise, and depending on which one your send, the primary school section is not too rigorous and it is more like the Australian primary school system. I personally think primary school should be LS if you want to relocate your kids to Australia by secondary education level since I think Chinese is very important to their generation and for competitiveness sake. Going to a good EMI LS is hard I understand, but perhaps just a local LS, would that be ok too. I have seen many people struggle at top LS due to pressure and lack of confidence. Is it worth it?

Just in Australia, unless you get into a good public high school, or in NSW, you get into a selective high school, it is HARDER (due to lack of learning support) to get an academic orientated education in a public high school. As such if your kids will relocate back in Sydney, if they can't get into the selective or private schools, most kids end up doing a lot of the studying on their own to do well; but that being said in Australia, the requirements to get into universities isn't as tough as there are way more choices vs. HK.

I think I will target some private or direct subdidy emi schools now. no chance to go to EMI public school in hk, no such school near home. we are from brisbane, so we will send our girl back to brisbane, hopefully at year 11 in the best private girl school in QLD. Surprisingly, it is so easy to get in comparing to those famous schools in Hk. The one we are looking at is non academic selective, and offer the place by the time of application. we applied when my daughte was only 11m old, so shouldn't have big problem to get a place.

Good luck to your endeavours. I have a cousin attending Logos academy and she enjoys it, small classes and at the secondary level offers IB.
