My little girl got the P1 offer from both KJS and RC. Both are good schools....tough decision. My elder daughter is currently in RC, but ppl told me KJS is hard to get in too... So how?

isn't it better to have two gals going to the same school?  does your older daughter like RC?

I think it is more about if the school is suitable for the kids, not because if the school is harder to get in? personal thought only

I guess RC is more like a bilingual school while KJS is more traditional. RC is getting more popular though it is located quite far away from Kowloon and HK island.
Personally I would choose KJS: Government subsidy, better facility, King George V.

Agree with you the Government subsidy is v attractive for KJS.
However, when comparing the facilities, I think RC with a campus which is well equipped even for secondary students I think it will not be worse than KJS. Regarding connection to KGV, it is only subject to residential location, not guarantee.

the campus of KJS has been in use for only around 2 years. Also, Esf is planning to link up KJS and KGV together (Esf parents should have received the email). KJS kids could certainly use the KGV facility more in the future.
Anyway RC is quite attractive to those who are focusing on learning Chinese. Since we speak Chinese at home, we are okay with what the school offers. We could teach Chinese at home. the most thing I don't like is RC too distant.

Will choose KJS as its very difficult to get in, and it's more international

Thx so much for your inside knowledge re KJS linking to KGV, do you know whether BHS have direct connection with KGV too? (since my knowledge per website and another thread says not all pupils can go up to KGV, for example if the kid is residing at Olympic or Mei Foo etc.)

Fact is, which ESF secondary school a child goes to does NOT depend on which ESF primary school he/she is attending but on the residential address at the beginning of Year 6, and the secondary school catchment zones are different from the primary school ones.

For example, a child living in Jordan will go to Kowloon Junior for primary but Island School instead of KGV for secondary. A child living in Tsuen Wan will go to Beacon Hill for primary but Shatin College instead of KGV for secondary. A child living in Tsing Yi will go to Shatin Junior for primary but Island School instead of Shatin College for secondary.

The above is further complicated by ESF occasionally redrawing the catchment zones, so if one is targeting a particular secondary school (such as KGV), be prepared to check ESF's latest area mappings before starting Year 6 and move address if necessary.

The following document describes ESF's current school zones:-

Olympic is at the boundary between catchment zones, if the residential address is south west of Cherry Street, it is Kowloon Junior then Island School, if not, it is Beacon Hill then KGV.

Mei Foo is Beacon Hill then Island School.

ESF's catchment zones sometimes are a little baffling.

For Discovery Bay it is Bradbury then Island School.

For Tung Chung it is Kowloon Junior then KGV.

Bottom line is, NEVER assume that going to a particular primary school will land a child in a particular secondary school, ALWAYS re-check their zones when it gets near the time (i.e. beginning of Year 6).

Not true for "more international" tho...think more than 60% of the KJS students is from one ethnic group.

And don't think it is more difficult to get in since ESF uplifted the Cat 1 / Cat 2 requirement.  Basically, if you are from ESF kindies you are very likely to get interview these two years.  From my observation, more than 90% of ESF kindies kids got interview offer these two years, while before I think it was around 60 - 70%.  And I think RC is more selective in choosing their students relatively as ESF primaries' admissions is non-selective.

KJS is preferred as the student mix is more international. RC mostly local HK students. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I just wonder where u get the information that 60% of the kjs students are from one ethnic group. I guess u are taking about indian, right? It should be around 30% from my observation. U might also check the following link about student mix in 2009 as reference:

Most ethnic Chinese in KJS hold foreign passports? What is the proportion of expat families (white UK?)
