Yes. I know of course.That was why I mentioned the cum laude etc groups.
But students would only be put into categories.
For example, you will know who are cum laude, who are magna cum laude etc.
But you will not be able to know whether one is 3.5 or 3.69 if you only know this person is cum laude.
I do not think students would be ranked within each category.
Most of the time, students from the same category would be asked to go on stage according to last name.
Chances are, the student mentioned in the article did not fall into any "cum laude" groups. (Lesson learnt: work harder in the future).
And worse, his last name was Yu or Young, and that was why he was at the end of the list.
To be honest, I am sure there are many students that do not have "cum laude" anyway.So not a big deal.
