After I restarted my kindle paperwhite, it got stuck on the kindle startup screen. I've tried to reload it by holding the power button for 20 seconds and then released but it still doesn't work. It just keeps on reloading the startup screen (the one with a person reading a book under a tree) but would not load the content. This kindle is 3 years old i.e. no more warranty. Is there any method I can try or is there any place that can fix? Appreciate your help!

Try holding the Power button longer. I remember someone said up to 30 mins in some forums. Good luck!

Troubleshooting Frozen Screen


Press and hold, or slide and hold, the Power button for a full 40 seconds, even after the screen goes blank, then let go. Press or slide the power button to restart if the device does not start up again on its own.

If the screen is still unresponsive, plug in your device using the USB cord or power adapter that came with it. We recommend charging Fire tablets with an Amazon power adapter. Let the device charge for 30 minutes, unplug it, and then try to restart again.

已出機3年，即是 2013年版的KPW。

請問：
1. 這次因何事要restart?
2. 對上一次用是多久之前？
3. 最後一次使用除了閱讀外，還做過什麽？
4. 有沒有曾經改動過系統軟件？例如：jailbreak for certain purpose?

(1) My KPW's memory was full and I had to delete some books before downloading new purchases. After the removal and downloading of books, I have restarted the kindle.
(2) It was used very recently. Actually it's used almost on a daily basis.

(3) I only use my KPW to read e-book purchased from amazon.

(4) No.

I've tried to restart it many times now but still does not work. It just keeps on restarting itself and then stuck on the startup screen and then restart itself over and over. I don't want to say goodbye to my KPW yet...

Have you updated the KPW to the latest firmware version?

As you encountered the problem dur8ng the last book purchase, have you tried contacting Amazon support despite the expired warranty?

I suspected my KPW crashed when it automatically updating its firmware when I restarted it. Not it's not even responding when I connect it to my computer (my computer cannot detect my KPW!)
Yes, I've been trying to contact amazon.com but amazon.com referred me to amazon.ca where my KPW is registered and amazon.ca customer service is closed. Knowing the service of Canadian companies, I do not have high hope (sob sob sob).

Thank you all for being so patient and taking the time trying to help me fix the problem. I've managed to get hold of amazon.ca. They told me this problem is call restart loop i.e. my kindle is trapped in the restart mode because one of the files is corrupted. They said it cannot be fixed cause they cannot reprogram a kindle (sob sob sob).

I've asked them how to avoid this restart loop in the future. They suggested me to restart my kindle everyday and not to overcharge the battery (don't charge overnight).

Anyway, though I'm really sad that my kindle cannot be fixed, I really appreciate your help!

I think it really sounds unresponsible just saying "Ooops, it's a software problem that we do not have a clue how to fix it. So your kindle it's now doomed & certified." Is Amazon ca gonna do something say offer you a trade-in? If not I think you should keep asking/demanding them to offer you a replacement deal.

I expect I can re-read my kindle books for many years to come. I'll be absolutely furious if I cannot access them.

Sorry to know that your Kindle is still stuck. Have you tried holding the button longer? Another friend broke her loop just last night by holding the button for 1-2 minutes. Do try again, if it doen't work, repeat and try longer. It can take up to 30 minutes.

Initially they offered $20 discount if I 'upgrade' my KPW to a newer version. Then they took it back after realising I'm stationed overseas, citing they cannot offer discount to overseas address! From the sound of it, this restart loop is not very uncommon. The amazon rep knew right away what the problem was when I described it to her. Frankly, even with the discount, I think I'll be better off to buy here in HK considering the shipment fee and tax on top of the purchase price.

I'm so sorry for you.

Maybe you should google about how people have solved their kindle reboot loop problem. Here is one from youtube - "Kindle Fire Stuck on Logo Screen" - not sure if it will work with KPW though.

Thank you for your suggestion. Sorry I just saw your message as I only logged in occasionally. I've got the problem fixed already. Took it out to a shop which fixed it for me.

Just curious. Do you know how the problem is fixed? Any parts replaced?

The company replaced the motherboard. Not cheap but at least it's fixed.
That company said in most cases this problem (which is not uncommon) can be fixed by hard-loading the software (I forgot the terminology but it's something like that). But since mine is an old model and that company does not have that old version. They can only replace the motherboard which is a more expensive option.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe it is a good time to backup all your Kindle system files.
