Put DBS's admission criteria as example:

Academic results  50%
ECA                   25%
Interviews          20%
Associations       5%

Musical instrument is only part of the 25%, unless your instrument is rare in HK, how many hours the kids will spend on it....... how about athletics, swimming, singing, community service, leadership role in school, uniform team, many many combinations to make up ECA.....

If you aim for DBS, you can think about Chinese musical instrument.....

Most elite schools won't count piano as musical instrument, because so many Grade 8th in the school, even the world champion is in the school. If the school has an orchestra, violin can be a better choice.

況且有件樂器傍身, 上了中學後, 樂團欠乜, 你補上都話咁易上手. 其實我覺得學開樂器d人學乜都快d, 因為專心!

甚至你去遊學或留學都有d野玩比人睇, 無咁吽豆 ...

朋友個仔當年讀九宣, 成績好,小5/6排全級1x, 西樂8級,考男拔, 唔收. 還有兩間好top津貼男校, 唔收. 男拔唔收, 可能佢考既時, 拔拔個倉有好stock係手, 就唔會再入貨.

如果係出名的地區名校, 特別係津校, 成績大過天, 講一口流利英語, +教處排名, 有利過樂器既優勢.

如果什麼課外培養都以升學導向去看, 學習或培養都會有反效果.

現小學生學樂器人數不少, 能以此為助升學, 要不少時間、金錢、努力還加天份. 同樣時間努力, 花在中英數上, 對升學助力更多.

音樂之好, 性格情操都 ...

好贊同你的看法。

為了心儀的中學，其實還有很多方法。比如努力讀書、多與小孩做討論、多做運動鍛煉身體等等。

我分享一下自己的仔仔的經歷：
P.1 開學2個月，學校有ECA 的violin 同非洲鼓學，我問仔仔想學嗎？最後，選擇了badminton 第一位，非洲鼓第2位，但最終抽籤，甚麼都抽不中。
仔仔只是失望抽不中badminton 。
我也不太在意抽不中，因為他一路有學開鋼琴。但當他知道他的朋友仔中有人開始學violin，他也說想嘗試。跟着，我對他說如果要學多一樣樂器，一定要put effort 去練習，我不會容許他每星期「求其」練習一次就當是玩就算。
另外，我還說學violin 要用頸夾琴，開始時可能覺得唔舒服同埋好易累。
之後，他在音樂堂看過同學在表演violin solo 。我再一次問他想不想學violin? 他說不想了。
其實，他跟本分不清楚 violin 和 guitar 的分別。我知道他想學的是guitar。當我對他的琴老師說，等他夠7歲，就讓他學guitar。
琴老師對我讓他學試guitar，而不讓他試 violin，不大讚同。雖然琴老師沒有講出口，我也知道，始終guitar 不是classical musical instrument，不能夠參加管弦樂團，對升學沒有用途。我是不是一個「儍家長」？
