My child is now K2 in local kindergarten.  We applied ESF Y1 for 2010.  Just wonder after ESF Y1, can he apply local primary school in 2011?  Many thanks for your kind attention and your time.

Answer to your question, of course YES. Eligible.

However, your child would have just gone to ESF for 1 year, like steamball asked, why the hassle?

Your chance of getting into a local primary school would be highest by the government's allocation system. Naturally your child will have a local school seat.

However, if you are asking whether your child is going to be competitive enough to get into the elite local primary schools like DBS, DGS, Ying Wah, St Stephen's, Good Hope, Sacred Heart, .... then, that's really depending your child's portfolio and how he or she will perform in the interview.

If you go to ESF for 1 year, ensure you have tutor or outside lessons to keep up the chinese.

I'm always thinking about that if I am going to bankrupt tomorrow.

Try to make the question simple, can you move to stay in US for one year and then move back to Hong Kong again. The logical answer is "yes" but need to face the problem to adapt to the new environment and new system. Why to make our life diffcult if you already know your plan? Unless unexpected circumstances such as bankrupt => no choice. Nevertheless, HK is a nice place, there are some DSS and private schools which are in between IS and local school which make your life a little bit easier.

Take it easy.
I meant If i bankrupt tomorrow, i cannot afford IS tuition fee anymore and then going back to local school is my contingency plan.

Let me guess the thread opener's intention:-

ESF Y1 = K3

This parent wants to see if ESF is really ok as a school so he/she is thinking of sending his child there for a one year trial.  If it is ok, then he wl let the child to stay on.  But if it is not up to his standard, then he can still pull the child out and put him back into local school P1.

It is 100% practical but not a funny experiment...

I actually did similar thing when I came back to HK last year. I decided to put my son in local primary school as I didn't feel comfortable with the standard in IS. But I would suggest to make the move for your child in the earliest age the better.

I worked in Shanghai and Xian before. I would prefer to avoid any conflicts (too much in Int'l School forum) arguing with parents with different opinions. My negative experience on IS may not apply here. The IS there charged about US18000 a month and I find them too loose in many ways. My son actually enjoyed very much in those IS and made many good friends. Now with much of our efforts (mainly on Chinese subjects), he manages to adapt into HK local school system.

Hi js9212002,

I have the similar case myself - when my daughter was with ESF school for Y1 and then switched her out to one top local primary school.

My advise will be...
1) In ESF, you need to keep him busy throughout the year as thought he is in local primary school
2) Chinese needs lot of work to brush up further to maintain the local school system as ESF uses simplified Chinese.
3) Join lot of activities like other local kindergarten students as you may need to compete with them with their awards and performance in future P1 interview
4) Your Cantonese needs to be very good as most ESF students' Cantonese speaking is poor (with gramatical issue) - this will drag down your son performance in P1 interview as most school would use Cantonese in interview (they aspect your native language to be good)
5) Time and support from the family will be needed

Take a good consideration as you may only benefit from ESF (Good Reading skill + English) while you will be weak in Chinese and Maths.

Cheers...

Hi Steamball

My husband and I believe that we'll only have very slim chance of getting accepted by the local primary school(s) we like next year (our kid will be K3 then).  Getting into ESF next year (Y1) is like a back up plan.

We had back-up plan like this before.  My son is with a local primary school at present.

Our plan was:

A) If accepted, join P1 in the local primary school which we really like.

B) If not accepted, stay with ESF which we are totally comfortable with.

Regarding the Chinese curriculum, make sure your child is up to the standard of the local K3.

For reward or competition, do it if you think that may help your child's development but not for the sake of P1 application.

Why don't you wait till you get a aceeptance letter from the ESF first.  I believe your child is catergorised under 2 that means your child can go to local school.  She may not get accepted due to the such a high demand for seats.
