Canadian citizens have higher priority to be selected for interview. The debenture is transferable when the student leaves the school.

Due to the large amount of applications, starting this year (2014 entry) they usually only interview kids who are Cdn citizen. Therefore, having Cdn citizenship in reality is no longer a priority, but a prerequisite....

I disagree. I know many friends who didn't have CDN passport, had interviews.

Debenture is only purchaseable after you have been accepted into the school and STILL, I am waiting after one year. It's not easy to get a debenture now in CDNIS

They truly look at the candidate's performance in the interview, sibling priority, canadian passport, parent's background.... all comes second. (AFTER your kid passes the assessment, it might have some affect, but before your kid passes assessment, NO exception is made.... so far, that I have heard of.)

if you are a Manulife employee or customer, you can look at their scholarship program for CDNIS. 6 years ago my son was granted the scholarship which waives the debeture/levy, and grants 25k per year for tuition. And, it guarantees a place immediately without waiting once you pass the assessments and scholarship approval.

any kind I think. customers who had bought their insurance/MPF/investment products? but as said, my son applied for it in 2008, I am not sure if there is any changes now. you can call their corporate communication department to ask. I remember the application timeline was April

Hi Pianokc, are you referring to interview that just happened this year? (Feb 2014)
Did they apply a year ahead? Because this policy just started this year so they do give leeway for non-Canadian applicants who applied prior to this policy. At the young age of 2 or 3 (for pre-reception/reception applicants), i don't think academic performance would rank that high, so unless they have priority such as staff, siblings, debenture, citizenship, returnees or relocation.

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR ADMISSIONS ASSESSMENT
Due to an overwhelming number of applications received, priority for an admissions assessment will be based on academic/school performance* and the following criteria. Those who fulfill one or more of the following will receive an assessment interview as long as all available documentation is submitted on or before the application deadline:

Children of staff
Siblings of students enrolled at CDNIS
Applicants who are nominees under the Capital Debenture programme
Applicants who passed the admissions assessment and were placed on the waiting list of the preceding school year
Applicants who hold Canadian citizenship/Canadian passport (please provide a copy of citizenship certificate or passport with application)
Children of alumni
Former CDNIS students who left the school and are returning to Hong Kong
Applicants whose families are relocating to Hong Kong who have not yet secured a school place

I know a few UK friends who had interviews this year too, since they applied a year ago. I just want to put down what i saw so parents without some sort of priority may consider carefully before dishing out $2000 for the application next year.
I agree with the impossibility regarding debenture. I wish i get to know some parents with kids graduating from CDNIS this year, LOL. Yup, the candidate's performance comes in first, but even with an 'Excellent' interview it is not a guarantee into the school.

I applied in 2011 for my girl and was updated lately the admission criteria will be applied to us even we had applied earlier.

How old is your girl? Is she applying for Reception this year? (or next year?)
Is she a Cdn citizen? Did she get an interview? (i hope she does!)

It is possible that it mainly applies to the kindergarten applicants, as they probably have to deal with a legion of applications at that level. It is also possible that for next year their priority will be stricter than this year, as the number of applications increases every year...

p.s. According to SCMP, there are estimated to be as many as 300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong. Imagine just 1% of them applies to CDNIS, that would be 3000 applicants... Although CDNIS is one of the largest IS in HK, they do have only 1845 students at the moment (we're counting from pre-reception to grade 12).

We are not Canadian citizen. I applied pre reception before but then I changed to reception. It should be for 2016/2017. I don't put hope in it, on the other hand, I try to put my elder girl to ESF or RC or Kellett so the younger one can enjoy the siblings priority.

Smart move! Pre-reception has only 40 space whereas reception has 80 additional ones, so the chance is much higher. I know a mom with TWO kids in CDNIS primary already and her third child still couldn't get into the pre-reception class... but then, if you really want to get into CDNIS and doesn't mind the application fees (and if they give your child an interview, which unfortunately the chance is getting slimmer by the year), then two chances (pre-reception + reception) is still more probable then one chance.

We're Canadian citizen and we applied for pre-reception last year, and my son was sick on the day of the interview (he threw up right before going in, so he was smelly and not in the mood to respond to the teacher, although usually he was sunny & chatty). He failed big time. This year we applied for reception and we are more ready this time around. My boy seemed to be his old self going in and coming out, so at least we have a good fighting chance. Just experience from existing applicant :)

We have finally decided on Canadian International. Any parents with kids going into reception this year please PM me. I'd love to set up a What's app group. I know another kid in my son's class already, and hope to grow the network so fellow parents can support one another. All the best to those still waiting for a reply. i know how difficult this is. He currently goes to a Montessori school in Discovery Bay. DMS. Great little school.
Feel really sad to have to leave the school. They also have a branch at Sheung wan, i believe.
